General update

The third rule is shut up about calling me a Luddite or I will throw my flip phone at you, or my Windows 95 computer.

Everyone has their own set of rules…

the relevant point seems to be, that there are no really important advances anymore.

so the industry, to go on selling, needs to make cosmetic advances and artificial incompatibilities.

that means, Bob needs to change the forum software (and pay for it) to keep the forum compatible with the net.

and for me it will mean to buy at least one new pc and to say farewell to XP.

for many of you it will be similar. you have to cough up money.

and afterwards we can do more or less (after the bugs are killed) the same with the forum and the rest of the net as we could do before.

Hail to the technological advance!

I work with technology all day long, and I hate it, because it doesn’t work as advertised. If it did work as advertised, I would have to get a real job.

Within the last week I retired my XP and launched a Win 10. It is surprisingly different, and yet much the same. Still, I yearn for MSDOS. That, I understood, and could make stand up and sing.

Steve, yea DOS is been stripped of most of its functionality, but what’s left does lurk in Winders. I go to the command prompt (DOS) from time to time to work out why I cant get a printer to print.

What’s missing? Normally you can still run old DOS programs if you want. (and I still do)

ipconfig, ping, and all the “net” commands are very useful to the power user…

I kept my XP to run windoze unique programs and switched to Linux.

No more Bloatware loaded for applications I have never even heard of let alone ever would contemplate using, looks like windows but is faster because there is no unnecessary stuff loaded and its Free!!!

At work our retrograde step department aka the IT nerds just “upgraded” me from Win 7 to Win 10 and now my computer works so much slower that I can actually see what is going on with it, time delays about the same as my old commodore 64 when opening documents etc for someone my age it really is restful.

Rant mode On;

MS, Apple, Google and all the other software people really should look at asking their users what they want out of the software instead letting some software engineer nerd try to second guess what they want i.e. make a basic OS with addons as required by the user (a custom fit) first one that does that will clean up but what do you expect from a bunch of Uni students who never really got out of the garage business model.

Stop trying to be all things to all people.

Rant Mode Off;

If you have adequate ram and disk, Windows 10 runs faster than 7.

If your computer runs slower now, then they either botched the upgrade, or they just don’t know how to clean off the extra stuff you don’t want, mostly programs that autostart.

I’ve probably built 75-100 Win10 machines myself… and the ones I upgraded were all faster afterwards given at least 2gb ram and a defragged hard drive.

Greg

p.s. no one will make anything anymore that is just basic if they are making money from it, the bean counters always want to “add on value”… meaning additional features you did not want, changes that don’t help you, etc. Ever try to buy a car off the lot with no options? (how come there is no emoticon for a wink, the most common one in the world?)

Greg,

Have you re-read it twice before posting ? How many times do we have to discuss this? Do we “really” need to start another thread on that topic that has been covered before? JUST GO TO MY WEBSITE then e-mail me so I can let you in then you will see the numerous vignettes that “others” have done on this topic. Check out the vignette “my milk shake brings the boys to the yard” with the sub section titled “damn right it’s better than yours”.

OR you could just go to the bottom right on the reply choices and hit the emotion you choose?

Wow…I can see your next obvious career move:

Is that an empty desk behind the girl in the blue hat?

When you “hobby” on computers, it’s funny how many “friends” you accumulate… “can you just take a look at my computer”… first everyone in your family, then their friends, etc.

But it’s a fun challenge, unwinding all the junk that Microsoft “gives” you to make your life “better”

moral: you can either complain about “progress” or find a way through it.

(ha ha, back to the topic)

Greg

I’ve used decrapifier with reasonable success. It’s not perfect (works best on a brand new PC) but not too bad if you don’t spend your life in the bowels of Windows; something to consider.

Boy this sure appears to be a tangent from the initial post/announcement by Bob.

Hey folks

I havent done an update for a while, and I know there are some issues hanging as far as bugs, etc. The company that provides the software I run LSC on has been doing a major re-write of the software. They are adding more security and spam prevention (Oh boy do I get spam), and a bunch of new features. They wont be rolling it out until fall/winter 2019, so I dont expect to even try to have it up on LSC until next year about this time. That does, however, leave us with a handful of bugs that I cannot fix myself, and that they are not going to fix because they are dropping support of the version of the codebase that we are currently running here. (we’re not THAT far behind, but we are).

Anyway, I’ll be keeping an eye on developments around this, and try to get some early screenshots so we can see what the heck the site will look like in the future.

-=Bob

So, an update on this finally. The company that provides the software is not going to re-write the software I run LSC with, but instead they are concentrating their rewrite on the hosted-only package. I host LSC on a server that I rent, it isnt co-hosed (we have enough traffic that that isnt feasable). Anyway, that means a couple things. There wont be a major change immediately with LSC, but it also means that the code will get minimal support moving forward. That ultimately will mean finding another package to run LSC on. I’m not interested in doing that at the moment, so I’m going to ignore it for now. There are very few forum / site software packages out there with a similar feature set to what we have here on LSC, its going to be a tough search. But, like I said, not something I will even start until I need to.

In the mean time, I may do some updates for bugs, etc, as they become available (we’re a few versions behind now). Hopefully these will come with minimal issues.
