Large Scale Central

For Richard on the POC

Richard, That is a great idea, using potted trees/shrubs, so they can be moved around. Unfortunately I wasn’t bright enough to think of that so I planted mine directly in the ground. Here is a view from out along the lane looking in toward the railroad. The shrubs have only been in for 2 years so they have some growing and filling in to do but by next year or the year after they will make great background from the other side of the railroad.

A closer look at the area I’m working on now. You can see the shrubs are starting to reach above the tabletop and provide a background. Dick, if I had used your idea of shrubs-in-tubs I wouldn’t have had to spend the last few days wading through the brush to lay track

Good pix Rick. A pic is worth a thousand words, isn’t it?! Tks!

That’s one way to keep from having to mow the grass, don’t water it!

Hey Steve,

I wish that were the case but unfortunately it isn’t.
That (in the picture) is seasonal grass, it comes up every spring grows 1-2 foot high, seeds, dies, and dries out leaving behind lots of fire fuel. Watering will not prolong it’s life but it will be back next year after a winter dormancy and the spring rains start. Also the various kinds of Foxtails and other stickers are on the same schedule. We mow them down to the ground in late spring to lessen the fuel load as well as to help protect the dogs from injury.

So we have all the work of keeping it mowed but non of the benefits of a beautiful green lawn or pasture.

Here is a shot of Rick Marty’s recently completed Wainright Mining District, (earlier thread by the same name)and how he “plants” live trees mixed in with buildings and industry.
