John, I am surprised that you didn’t clarify the differing grades of compounds, and add the grades of jeweler’s rouge (spelling ?) for polishing. I am no expert, just know of their existence.
Metal polishes are too harsh or aggressive for plastic, I hesitated to offer any because that car appears to be painted and polishes are known to eat paints. For plain plastics I like this brand …
How ever there was just one version (#2)way back when.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Good information

I hope you saved the box Mr. Ames !
If not then the scratches and all the suggestions are probably a mute point.
Actually it would seem the the point would be moot if he re-used the box that caused the problem right? And really only if it got jostled and rubbed like in shipment.
Never miss the opportunity to bait the rooster my grandfather said.

Ifr you use Saran wrap then the hard plastic will not do as much if any damage to the paint. I have seen paint wear even on styrofoam and the foam gets the color from the packed item.
I used thin paper, like a type of tissue paper, in my HO storage/carry containers to protect the paint on my trains.

Early in my LS journey, I threw away all the plastic body wraps for everything. Then, I learned that the styrofoam will adhere to the plastic parts of the unit. I have some of my locomotives stored in their original boxes (they gotta be somewhere, right?). I need to take a look. That stuff it is shipped with is not saran wrap, in fact it does not “cling” as saran wrap is designed to do. Don’t know what the stuff is, but it’s not the same as your standard, clingy, kitchen wrap.
