Large Scale Central

First hand account of Obama's Iraq trip

So how does one react to a terrorist attack in one’s backyard? Especially one on such a massive scale? How do you sit through a live TV broadcast of planes crashing into buildings full of people in 2 of the biggest cities on the east coast and not have a reaction? Have you ever wondered what our parents went through on Dec. 7th, 1941? Who in this country wasn’t affected emotionally by what happened? And what exactly should we have done? Just gone about our merry way as if nothing had happened? How would something like that not disrupt a nation? The streets weren’t deserted around here. Most people continued working where I live. I didn’t see any panic where I worked. What I saw and heard was a lot of anger and confusion which was exactly what I felt. Mostly anger. My first reaction was to call my parents and see how they were doing. They were just as angry and confused as I was. I saw a lot of panic on TV which was understandable seeing as how they were right on top of “Ground Zero”. I also saw a lot of very brave people continuing to do what they were trained to do and going above and beyond their duties. I saw people jumping from the upper stories of the Trade Towers so they could die in their own way. I can’t imagine what was going through their minds.

We didn’t make the action successful by our reaction. We made it successful by our in-action in the years leading up to it.

My first reaction was to call the Navy Recruiting District to see if I could come off retirement and go back on Active Duty.

It had an emotional affect, no doubt. But to shut the entire country down for days had to have the terrorists grinning from ear to ear.
And yes, you have to go about your business. Just ask anybody living in Israel, Belfast or London.
I’m happy to hear folks handled it well and continued to work in your area. Exactly what they should have done.
But when entire cities half way across the country shut down in fear and panic…it feeds the terrorists.
If we have to give up our personal freedom to stop terrorists…the terrorists win.

Well, in 20/20 hindsight I guess you could say some people over reacted. Who knew if those 4 planes were just a small part of a much larger action? Isreal, Belfast and London have had a lot more experience with that sort of thing than we have, too. Sometimes it’s better to err on the side of caution. I don’t disagree with you(for a change) but our overall reaction since then I don’t think the terrorists expected.

I’m sure they were grinning from ear to ear…then. They sure ain’t now. They were dancing in the streets watching those 2 towers collapse. Now they’re hiding in caves in some god-forsaken wilderness wondering if their “safe haven” will be their tomb.

Given the state of the Taliban insurrection in Afghanistan I doubt too many are hiding in caves anywhere.

Good, now they’ll be easier to find…

Ken,
We share a lot of common ground…in the middle.

I guess you could say we’re just typical Americans, always eager to quarrel and fight among ourselves as we all have our opinions but it sure is nice we can express them in a friendly way.

It is good for us all to hear what others think. Keeps us on our toes. And every now and then it opens our eyes to something we weren't seeing before. Ralph

Reminds me of a bunch of old farts around a cracker barrel near the pot bellied stove on a winter’s Saturday night down at the General Store. Cussin’ and discussin, and solvin’ all the world’s problems.

Hey, who ya calling an old fart?

More like a chronologically-advanced flatulent…

Yep, drinking beer and eating left-over chili, which means there will be old farts, new farts and anything in between. :/ :P
