Large Scale Central

Fire House

Good choice, Bruce. I approve (and look forward to seeing how your project progresses) even though I am merely “neutral.”

Steve, if I am on the computer, I am in my room. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Progress is slow, but not steady. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

Worked on the roof a bit, trying to get the correct angles in place. Also cut out the openings in the tower and glued it together.

Bruce, if you don’t mind my asking, how much did those windows cost you? The ones from Mark D.

who needs fast progress?

when its done, you just will start something else…

just a stupid question… did you check, if the firetruck fits into door and building?

Interesting build. Towers are fun, especially the roof.

I don’t mind…the money’s been long gone. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

For $150, I got one large arched window, 2 long tower windows, 14 side windows, 1 dormer window, 1 garage door, 22 cornices, 2 doors and 4 tower vent-like windows.

Plus Mark did all the work to model them - I just sent in the basic dimensions I wanted and a few pictures of the prototype. They are very nice and sturdy.

I am very pleased with the results and the value I received!

It fits, but I do not think I will build the door so it opens.

I might just model it permanently closed and make a large apron for the fire truck to sit outside.

I used to leave all of my vehicles outside for the entire year, but lately I’ve been bringing them in when the leaves fall and putting them out again in the Spring. While they’re inside, I scrub all the dirt off of them, do any necessary repairs and also put some Future wax on them.

Which reminds me, it’s about time for them to be put outside and I haven’t done ANY of that! If only I had more time…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)

Looking good!

I am; for almost 8 years! But, I think I need to retire from retirement just to free up some more time…not sure how I got anything done when I worked…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

True dat, Bruce.

Was that really supposed to say future wax? What’s future wax and no I am not trying to be a smarty pants if it’s really supposed to be funature wax. I genuinely am wondering if that’s what you meant and if so what is it.

Future is a brand of floor “wax”, that is basically just clear, gloss, acrylic.

This is what it looks like now.

Yes it really is “Future” wax. But now Pledge…

I wonder when they made the switch? I haven’t even used 1/4 of my Future bottle…

Bruce, I really like the proportions of the emerging firehouse. That’s going to really stand out, especially with that great window detail.

Do they have retirement apprentice/intern program that could help you get more done? (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Bruce, I am comparing your shell to the picture of the original. I use the eyeball test, with an eye toward proportions and the feel of the original. I think you’re close, especially in the body of the structure, but I think you’ve underestimated the height of the tower, especially the distance from the top of the (beautiful) second floor window on the front of the building to the bottom of the boarded-up window in the original. It looks like a crucial measurement to me because the overall height of the tower (which I might even exaggerate a little if it were my build) is one of the things that gives this building character. Just my opinion for what it’s worth.

I think you’re right to spend a lot of time getting the proportions just right because no amount of detailing and fine work will ever make up for proportions that aren’t what you’re looking for. I know. I wish I could go back on my mine build and correct a couple of proportions and angles, for example.

Could be right. We’ll see. It looks a bit better with the roof. I thought I had the measurements proportioned correctly from the photo…but I’ve been known to err a bit. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

I think the original photo was taken with a wide angle lens without any architectural adjustment, so it distorts the actual height, making the upper third look taller. To my eye, taking the lens issue into consideration, the model looks about right.
