Plenty of spikes but not many tie plates where you’re going. 
There are now! Nearly all the rebuilt track is getting tie plates.
Addendum to my last update…I had been dubious about the existence of this underground railroad in the time before the internet revealed all things. Then, one night, bored out of my mind as command duty officer of one of the Pearl Harbor facilities, I read the maintenance work authorization forms just to stay awake before my final round of the evening. Sure enough, there it was, a request for rail maintenance! I still tell that story when I give unofficial tours of the island.
