Large Scale Central

EBT Steel Boxcars

OK, Ill have to order some of that, it looks better than the Plastruct I have.

I’m going to do a test build over the next few nights. I have the box together right now, and Im laying out the zees right now, and taking a bunch of photos. Once I get it all done, Ill know exactly what we need as far as parts.

I have all the acrylic parts here now. I’m heading to the post office tomorrow to grab some boxes or envelopes or something.

Bob, be sure to take PLENTY of pictures as you progress…

OK Guys, sorry about the delay in getting this rolling. Work has been pretty busy lately and I haven’t made much progress.

This weekend I’ll pack up the parts and start shipping them out. If you havent sent me your mailing address, please do so!

I need to get my receipts together and get a final price, but it does look like it’s right around my earlier guess of $20 a piece.

Bob i’m sorry if i missed when and how much monet do i owe you please let me know

Bruce ,
That plastic looks like the stuff that needs a special cement , just in case anyone gets "stuck " with it .

re: Brake equipment. I’m really tired of epoxying a white metal brake wheel onto a brass rod. It always breaks off eventually. Id like to get a decent brass brakewheel, and solder it to the brake staff. Anyone know of one?

I can’t remember the last time one of mine came off, and I find it hard to believe that you’d treat your rolling stock worse than I do. I use a steel rod and use CA to epoxy the white metal wheel. Now, they do bend more than I’d like, so I would also like a brass wheel. I try not to use any white metal for small parts as it just bends too easily. I’m surprised no one makes a brass wheel…

Ref whitemeatl things falling off brass things .
Woss wrong with low melt solder ?
I use it a lot , there are several different temperatures , right down to low enough to solder itsy bits on brass boilers .
Wouldn’t be without it .

My test built has hit a stopping point until the corner angles come in, but here’s what it looks like so far

Im going to work a bit more on the end buffers, and figure out the coupler mounting. I still need mailing addresses from some of you. I have the parts packaged up, ready to go. Some have already gone out.

I can hardly wait to get started…!

I sent out a bunch of packages this morning. They should be showing up monday or tuesday for you guys.

I still need mailing addresses for:

Geoff Ringle
Charles Cole

I have your stuff ready to go.

Now to finish the test build!

Test building continues with the arrival of a Hobbylinc order. Ive installed the angle on the 4 corners and pondered the coupler mounting. But mostly Ive been working out the crossmembers. The EBT car has 2 distinct kinds of crossmembers. The first is a tapered I-Beam crossmember. There are 8, well, 4 pairs on the car. One pair at the bolster, and one about a foot outbound of the door Z beam. After a bit of pondering, and emailing with Bruce, I’ve settled on this. Take some 1/2" I Beam (the same as the center beams). Cut an appropriate length from the inner frame to the outer frame. mark at about 1/4 from one end. Cut a V shaped piece out of the webbing of the beam, and re-glue. Here’s one getting glued up.

and here’s all 8 installed in their appropriate positions

That really looks good, Bob! It looks like a fun project.

My stuff arrived today, Bob. Thank you. Now I look forward to following what you do to build the cars (I got 4).
I sorta wish we’d get more snow and ice storms so I could stay home and work on them. On the other hand,
4 more Aristo #6 switches also arrived today. Come on, spring. I want the ground to thaw.

Wheeeeeeeee…!! My parts arrived today too. Now Bob is going to have to put up with me asking a zillion questions…:stuck_out_tongue:

Question #1: Have you figured out what the extra pieces that we need to purchase will be?? I need to get the stuff ordered. Or is Bruce’s list satisfactory?

Question #2: Are there any drawings or is everyone working off the pictures?? A basic sketch with some dimensions would be appreciated. Doesn’t have to be to scale for me as long as the dimensions are available.

Question #3: What glues and solvents are being used to attach styrene to the acrylic??

OK, Bob! I’ll give you a break for the remainder of the day…

Ill have to go over Bruce’s list, but its pretty complete. Id add 3/16 I beam to it, too, but I dont know how much yet, so hold off your order.

For solvent, I’m using TAP plastics acrylic cement. MEK will work as well, but its VERY nasty. The TAP plastics stuff isnt as smelly. My order came in about 5 days from them.

As far as construction drawings, Im working off a set of drawings from NGSL, but Ill see about making some generic drawings to work with.

Once my test build is done (probably the end of this week), I’ll start the set of ‘real’ instructions, and go step by step. It hasnt been a difficult build so far, but there are a few 'watch out for’s that I need to document.

Thanks, Bob. It’ll actually be 2-3 weeks before I get started…just rounding up all the extras and ordering what’s needed. So no rush on my part. In the mean time I’m going to start a build log for my cars.

I should also mention a great resource is the QuickPic book. Those are an invaluable modeling aid.

And if you get the acrylic cement, make sure you get:
• An applicator - Small BD-25/2 for acrylic solvent cement
• Polypropylene Funnel

Of course you can just use a brush, but the applicator makes it easy.

And DON’T order from InternetTrains.com. Order put in on the 15th, charged on the 15th; has NOT arrived yet, even though site claimed it was in stock and they promise 2 to 3 days service.

Hobbylinc has good prices and quick delivery.

Mine also came yesterday, “Holiday Mail Scedule” had them sitting in some courthouse. I just reread all of the postings and have more questions than answers, so I can see this is going to be slow. Please be tolerant because basically thses postings have caused me to venture into unchartered waters for me.

Bob - you stated your going to make up a set of instructions? Maybe I’ll wait for that.

The glue - Tap plastic acrylic cement - does that have to be ordered or is it available at big box stores?

MEK - that’s the brain cell nasty stuff, right?

Do you take the blue plastic covering off before glueing? I told you, these are going to be basic questions.
