EBT Steel Boxcars

I use 1/16 wire hanger for grabs and rungs in 7/8 scale, so I’d say thats prolly a lil thick fer youse guys… Kevin…I’veseen several pictures of aging grey boxcars…

And I think Bob got the ideer about the water cars from this page… http://www.dementia.org/~adams/ebt/1999apr/99aprthumb.html I’ve always thought the grey cars were weird on a standard Boxcar red fleet…any ideas? I thought perhaps the first ones I saw, were cars that got primered but never painted for some reason at Rockhill, but these are apparently in existance at Mt Union too!

Bart,

Is it possible that you guys are mistaking faded red and rust for grey. I’ve been around those cars a lot and paint color is not something that is evident.

That’s just the rust reflecting the light. By the mid 70s, virtually all the dormant steel equipment had lost any sign of paint on the exterior. Remember that maintenance on the equipment had been deferred since the late 40s/early 50s, so they were already showing signs of wear when the railroad shut down in 1956. One photo, taken in 1954, shows one box car already pretty much without any paint on it, except the number. Many latter-day photos show no signs of lettering on the box cars at all.

The water car shown in the photos (car #167) is most decidedly red–and particularly well maintained in a 1956 photo. The water cars were equipped with lined interiors, hatches in the roof, and drains in the floor for carrying water to the mines for the boilers during the dry summer months when the springs that normally supplied the water would dry out. The railroad only had one tank car.

Bob, Bruce,

Bob, along with the two car kits I also would like two sets of boxcar ends.

Bruce, concerning the rivets on the car will the rivets be added directly to the kit body or are you planning to add rivet detail to 1mm stryene sheet and apply that to the car body?

Howdy
Heres the list of who (besides me) is in on this:

Bruce 6
Kevin Strong 1
John Reilly 1
Warren 2
Geoff Ringle 2
Kevin Strong’s friend 4
Jon Radder 4
Cale Nelson 2
Check Ger 2
Charles Cole 2

Anyone else?

Bob,

Chuckger and Charles Cole are the same. I emailed last nite and posted today. Just two cars for me please

Thanks Chuck

Ah, OK. got it!

Here’s another option for trucks…Aristo 29101 freight trucks… Phil uses these on his Gramps kit… They are still a bit short - about 4’ wheelbase…but it’s not like there’s a lot of choices. I’m not sure I want to buy another 5 hoppers just to get the trucks…

It’s hard to tell from the first picture as to what’s actually under the cars, but it looks like an Andrews truck. What is actually suppose to be there??

Bob put me down for 2, please.

The QuickPic book shows Andrews style trucks, but that Aristo truck looks pretty close. LGB makes an Andrews style truck, too, but I think it’d be expensive to go that way.

The trucks were made by the Vulcan iron works in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The drawing in Heimberger’s book has them at 4’ 6" wheelbase, but I believe that should be 4’ 8", as that’s what’s under the 3-bay steel hoppers. The Vulcan trucks do look strikingly similar to an Andrews truck, so one of those would be a good substitute. The trick will be finding one with the right wheelbase–if you’re going to be anal about things.

I’ll try for close.

These will be made by and lettered for the J&B. They will be very close to prototype in that they will be made with what’s available.

So, I guess I’ll really be spot on.

Whats under the new 1:20 Hopper and flat? Or are those Archie Bars?

I’ll be interested in the most cost effective truck avail…

Under the flat and box car, archbar trucks with a 4' 2" wheelbase. Under the hopper, 4' 2" wheelbase Vulcan trucks.

I’m most likely going the route that Bruce is. They will be lettered for my home road, so whatever I do will be prototypical…

So ya COULD use Vulcans provided ya weren;t terribly anal…and could snag soem from Bachmann?

How bad would the Vulcan trucks from the Bachmann 1:22 hoppers look? They are probably available from Bachmann for very little $ - That and I have a bunch of 1:22 hoppers that I’m not using at the moment.

JR

Jon, the trucks under the older 3 bays and the new 2 bays are different.

Bart, I’d use the Bachmann one if I could get them for a reasonable price. Getting them may be the problem though. The 2 bays are too new to have much for extra parts floating around. And as far as I know, currently the 2 bay is the only car using that particular truck.
