Large Scale Central

Dr. Who Stained Glass Window

Can I play too?

I built this outta styrene scarp strip after doing a bunch of windows one evening…I intend it to represent Baker/Tennat Industries on the railroad, but it never seems to be in the same place twice…the crews can’t always seem to find it…

Bart, I LOVE IT!!!

I was thinking of a 1:20.3 version myself…And of course it would need to move around!

I’m just spending tons of time and effort to build a stained-glass window of a B-rated British TV show for my ‘geek cave’…You guys are nuts!

LOL!

Well I’ll be danged. Who would have though that Mark was such a normal looking guy?

Nice glass by the way.

I’d hate to see what you consider “odd looking”!

Now, having said that, I have to ask, what would a panel like that cost commercially? The reason I ask, I’d love to get a small (maybe 12"x 12") panel done with the Freedom Central railroad’s Keystone logo. I’m not asking you, I’m just curious how much such a thing would likely cost.

I refrain from commenting on the whole Dr. Who discussion, as my interests turn more towards Starfleet. Course, that entryway would look just as cool with the Starfleet Chevron on one side and the seal of the Federation on the other?

However, as for the TARDIS… what about making it large enough in scale to be equipped with two rail axles, and using a NWSL magic carpet drive (you’d only need one) and letting it run around the layout? Just a thought. Does it have any special lighting effects? Could be easily duplicated with LEDs? Make for an awesome conversation piece at a show or convention.

Thinking about that gorgeous fish display that was shown… how good is the visibility from the front, ie the people coming to the door? Reason I ask, if there isn’t much light coming out to show off your work, you could line the edges of the glass with white LED strips (like they use for under cabinet lighting) to provide some illumination going out.

Custom stained glass is much like LS trains…The imports can be cheap but custom/quality is expensive. The Dr. Who panel would price out at about $500.00-$600.00. It has as much to do with the colors and number of pieces as it does with physical size. Some colors are quite expensive and you sacrifice a lot of glass to get the cut piece you want. A “simple” small 12x12 “hanger” would run about $25.00 in materials alone. I mention material costs as I was asked to build a Dr. Who window for someone who thought it would be less than $150.00 (I nearly have that in materials alone).

The “fish pond” widows show up great at night as well as day. Different lighting conditions give a radically different look depending on the time of day. At night they light up my front porch from the interior lighting, by day they bathe my entryway in soft color. The “fish” window has some of the most expensive glass I have ever purchased and I “threw away” a considerable amount to get just the right piece (the fish “bodies” even have a “scale-like” texture).

Very impressive mark, it all looks wonderful!
