Large Scale Central

Double grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Nope. Sales taxes here are state, county and sometimes city taxes. There are lots of car dealers in Lake County 'cause of Cook County’s dreadful sales tax.

There’s FET (Federal Excise Tax) nationwide on things like tires, booze, tobacco and a few other things.
Our state (Wa) has 8% sales tax, plus local to equal 8.8% on everything but food.
Groceries are tax free.
Oregon has no sales tax on anything. That’s why you don’t find big box stores in towns near the border.

Point 1 - The Portland Costco car park is 95% occupied by Washingtonians every saturday morning - trust me on this one. As is the Sportsmans Warehouse [now a Canadian company [heh heh]].

Point 2 - mrs tac and I are too old, too clever, too law-abiding, too rich and waaaaaaaaaaaay too white to be welcome in the present-day USA.

Thanks for the invitation, anyhow.

My daughter and son-in-law live in Vancouver, WA, work in Washington, and do all of their shopping in Portland, OR. The best of both worlds.

It seems nigh impossible to move to the US from the UK, even if one is self supporting.

...like 'Threadgold's Thorough-grip Garterettes'?

Make that ‘totally impossible’, unless, of course, you are coming from the south…

You can’t come here legally, only illegally.

Dear All,

A place to live with overall low taxes?

It seems it would be easier if your state (or other political area) was a net energy exporter (e.g. oil, natural gas, coal, electricity).

With the North Sea oil, it would seem that UK would be a net energy exporter, (I could be wrong), so the high taxes on goods seem out of place to me.

Areas around tourist destinations seem to have higher taxes.

As far as avoiding sales tax by buying out of state and having it shipped in, Wisconsin law says that you are to pay a “use” tax, equal to the sales taxes (WI state 5% plus applicable county and stadium taxes) on those items. Enforcement is lax, and very few add it to the proper line on their state income tax forms in April.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

9.5% sales tax in County King.

Not many taxes in Lost Wages.
Ask Darryl.

Mississippi has a 7% sales tax on everything. But buy a new car, have mercy! You think you have been robbed. It is amazing how may times one individual dollar can be taxed!
They tax your parents when you are born; They tax you when you work; They tax you when you retire, and they tax your relatives when you die. Three things are for sure, death, eternity and taxes!

Well, I'm not too sure about eternity, after all, we haven't seen a whole one yet.
