Of course you can do it, David!

LMAO !

I haven’t posted on the windmill project for a couple of weeks because the work on it was tedious and frustrating. Things like re-boring bearings because the fit was too tight, or re-adhering them to the plastic base because the first adhesive didn’t work. Yesterday was beginning to feel like the same thing, trying to ensure the shutters rotated freely. But once that mess was solved, was able to install the shutter daisy-chain linkage which (supposedly) makes them all move simultaneously. Here’s that linkage, which had to be installed upside-down.

After assembly, I used JB weld to bind the clevises and rods together, and hoped for the best while it set overnight.

Today I finally had some breakthroughs: the linkage worked! The shutters all move like they should. According to the project flow chart, I didn’t need to go out and shoot myself, but instead could progress to the operating arm linkage. Then came the ropes and down-haul rods.

The above shows the shutters close, and below shows them open.

Then came the piping, but that had to be taken apart to do the main pump shaft. Long story, but today’s seen a lot more take-apart / put-back-together as things were fitted up.

To connect the turbine shaft to the pump shaft, I’ll use an o-ring belt and two sheaves I designed. I couldn’t find commercial sheaves to do the job, so the sheaves 3d printed to fit shaft hubs from Pololu.

Next weekend will be a lot of tidying up.

Not to be too demanding, but it would be awesome to see a short video showing the vanes open/close.

So, hop to it, Cliff! (full disclosure: I work for YouTube :-))

Put the crack pipe down Cliff!

Wow! Very cool to have it working. This model would not be out of place in a museum!

Cliff, your attention to the minute details is just off the charts. Not only have you built what would be considered a fabulous static model, but also one that actually works. I’m in awe. Many thanks for sharing this project.

I have made only a few simple post on this site, but the real enjoyment comes from watching and reading about the construction and modeling techniques. The caliber of talent demonstrated on this site just makes my head spin. Cliff your work is nothing short of amazing. Thank you for sharing your talent with this unique project. You are truly an inspiration sir.

Hey Jim! You know, I wanted to do that yesterday, but ran out of time. But since you brought it up, I just put something together. Sorry about the shakiness, but YouTube removed the shaky-fixer… zup with that, Jim? Can you get on that tonight?

Ray, Dan, Peter, thank you so much for your very generous comments, you’re too kind! Y’all made my day, for sure.

And thanks for another PTCPD Rooster, I think that means I get an extra beer tonight, haHA!

That sure means a lot, Peter. Thank you very much.

And also, welcome aboard! And please keep posting!

Sorry about the de-shakifier. I was horrified that it was gone too. I’m afraid I don’t work on that part of YouTube and since I’m retiring, my clout is less than usual.

Great video! Your mechanism is smooth as butter. I love it!

Absolutely amazing. Now all you need is a windy day to take it outside and see if it actually works as intended…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I’ll be sure to do that, Ken!

(As soon as I can find a place for a motor and batteries…)

WOW. Need I say more (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
