Devon Sinsley MIK 2017 Dunakin Pass Snow Shed

I am pretty sure I have clear ones. Model car windows ya know. But I may not have any clear left.

Back then we didnā€™t have Gel ACC, I bet you could build your own.

John

John,

I will be trying all sorts of things. I have been youtubing this and the diorama guys and gamer guys do this sort of stuff all the time and they have several clever ideas for good looking icicles and stop action running water using common materials. everything from hot glue to clear silicone to clear silicon bath caulk to clear plastic silverware you name it.

I am not sure how far I will get by the deadline on the water and ice effects. I want to get the major details already started finished. Snow needs to be sanded down and painted. My snow chunks need painted. The rocks need placed the culvert needs finished, debris scattered about, some more plant matter and the sign. And Rooster thinks my wolf is too white so I will brown and black him up a little. I also have to wet the ground around the snow and on the top of the shed. If I get all that accomplished then I will experiment with icicles and falling water. If not I will cal it done for the challenge and then finish up the icicles later.

If I may offer a suggestionā€¦,

The problem with the right side is that you see what appears to be a shadow under the edge of the mound. IIRC, the original anaconda also had this. You no long have this on the left side.

As the snow melts, it melts to the surface of the underlying material so there should be no shadow. Perhaps this "gap could occur from the hot exhaust below cutting away at the bottom o the drift, but then it would be consistent among the drifts. Blend the snow into the roof and get rid of the shadow.

Now if we had a tide cutting away at rocksā€¦, thatā€™s very different.

Toddā€™s right about that gap. And, you know, we love you but weā€™re not leaving you alone until that snow it right!!!

i have to disagree.

when snow melts, where does it melt?

if most of the melting were on the upper surface, than the surface would have lots of cuts from run-off water.

imho, the melting occurs on the edges, where darker surfaces heat up more, than the white snow.

so the gap is, what we normally would see at the edges of melting snow.

Undercuts do happen, take a break buddy.

Remember Rule #1

Is it perfect yet?

They most certainly do undercut. And would especially on a dark roofed snow shed where warm are circulates under it. But with that said that picture is before the plaster was applied. There is no gap. Not sure why there was a shadow on the anaconda it was flush also. Maybe some small undercuts. But the new is flush with the roof.

Tonight I will sand and paint the snow and take a close up

OK So I am all done except the ice and water effects. Here is where I am at mostly. I have the sign finished but not in this picture.

I think it looks as good as I am willing to get it. I am used black india ink to darken the ā€œwetā€ wood. Then used clear gloss medium to give it a shine. I added a few pieces of snow and other details and put some boulders in. I guess I did OK on the rocks because when they were in a pile my daughters fiance said are those the rocks your going to use for your ā€œtrain thingā€ and I said yes. He picked one up and had a puzzled look and said ā€œthat isnā€™t a rock, did you make thatā€ to which I answered yes and he replied ā€œfooled meā€.

I also think there is a secret merger in the works. I donā€™t know why but I get the feeling the folks from GN have been around. . .you decide.

Makes all the difference. Very nice.

OK the next shots will be the glamour shots. But I will say this I think I found out how to do water effects and especially icicles. Siliconized acrylic caulk in clear. Its tub and shower caulk. I tried got glue first didnā€™t like it. Then I tried making them with the caulk on wax paper didnā€™t like that. Then I said why not blob it straight on and pull it into shape. Thatā€™s the ticket. I will need to let them cure. This also worked for making a small pool below the culvert and then putting some in the culvert and then just pulled it out and down to the pull. Will dry brush that with some white to froth it up. But I have tons of faith in that.

Now that looks much better. As Todd said: ā€œMakes all the differenceā€. The whole scene just works. Now you got all weekend to get some icicles added and get some water running out of the culvert. Donā€™t slow down just yet, you are almost there.

Ya gave it ā€¦ life! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Now step away and let it grow on ya.

Okay, Iā€™m ashamed to admit it, call me Doubting Thomasā€¦I didnā€™t have a lot of confidence you would pull this off, but you did it!

Well if your Doubting Thomas then I am his twin Skeptical Steve (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). I have never modeled snow of any type and certainly not a late spring avalanche remnant. I think it could still be better but I am happy. Just wait it is even better now. I am actually very happy with this. I used a whole slew of techniques that were new to me. One giant experiment. But the credit really goes to all of the minds coming together to elp me ā€œseeā€ it

Your build looks so good and the wet from the melting snow is great. Is that a Lil Hauler in there?

What is Tom Brady doing on top? you know the Greatest Of All Time or GOAT for short .

Todd Haskins said:

Yeah thatā€™s one of my lilā€™ haulers. It is the test bed for clearance. If a lil hauler unmodified can get through then my bashes will for sure. It clears with mmā€™s to spare.

OK I am sticking a fork in it and calling it done. All in all I am very happy with it I think if I can make an entire indoor layout with this kind of detail it will be very cool. This definitely pushed my abilities to new levels. I couldnā€™t have done it without all the help and suggestions and friendly criticism. I love the way everyone here pulls together to help make each others projects the best they can be. Without further ado I give you the Dunakin Pass Snowshed.

I love this picture with a real Douglas fir in the background. Not a bad approximation.

I hope you enjoyed this build as much as I did.
