Devon Sinsley MIK 2017 Dunakin Pass Snow Shed

Well taking the advice of Ty for doing the ground I had planned to use his homemade Sculptamold and then grout. He uses hydracal and cellulose insulation for the sculptamold. and then instead of zip texture (hydracal and powder paint) he suggested going over the sculptamold with grout. Colored grout is expensive so he suggested going to the local restore. Well that turned out to be bonanza. I found a full bag of a nice earth brown grout and a 1/4 full bag of a dark brown grout similar in color to the color I painted the rock wall. I also found a 3/4 full bag of cellulose insulation. Total cost $4.85.

Tomorrow I will experiment. I donā€™t have any hydracal and donā€™t want to buy just a small batch. 5#s in the hobby market is like $15 bucks. Ty put me onto a place in Spokane that can sell be 50# for $30.00 kinda a no brainer. So my experiment will be to use regular plaster which I have. If I donā€™t like the results I will buy the 50#s. I will need about a bucks worth.

busy week and weekend. But I did get some progress made.

I got the block piers painted, the wood stained, and the homemade sculptamold down.

Here is the grout ground texture and the track is ballasted. This one end I left undone so i donā€™t have to remove stuff later. Next will be to add the roof and make my sign.

This is shaping up nicely.

WOW. That looks great Devon.

I love the ties and ballastā€¦your build idea is looking better and better each time I check in. Slow down though, youā€™re making some of us (like me maybe) look bad.

John, mee too. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

Maybe we need to distract Devon with another idea.

No donā€™t do that. I have my GP9 and that little logger calling to me.

John,

last year I really liked the hand hewn log ties. I thought they looked great and had that backwoods logging operation feel. Now with the landscaping and the ballast I donā€™t like the idea. . .I love it. Yeah it will be some work to cut and sand down all the ties and then do the whole hand laying thing but that in itself is fun and I wonā€™t have a ton of track to do. But the uniqueness of the results will look very cool.

Is it done yet?

Nice work Devon, the hand hewn ties are great (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Looking good. Are you going for the First to Finish trophy ? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Devon, many thumbs up on the work and progress.

Iā€™ve been trying to figure out my doors and think Iā€™ve got it now. Will try my idea tomorrow. Thanks for your ideas.

Well first off for everyne who thinks I am some how screaming right along to an early finish. . .Well I saw Daveā€™s post saying 3 more weekends and I gulped and a sudden rush of panic set in. I am nowhere near where I want to be on this. It may seem to you guys like it is almost done but I have a lot of detail still to go. So donā€™t fret I will be burning the midnight oil on the last day I think.

So now that I have said that, I have completed the shed by getting the roof on it.

From this picture I have done a little more to the sign that is in the right lower corner. I have done the wood work. I need to make the stencil and paint it. I also started on the snow drift. Whatā€™s let one might ask? Well I have at least two trees to make, at least one more bush, texturing the upper section, add bear grass, add regular grass, and a whole crap load of rocks. But I do think I will make it.

I will also say I am very happy with how this is turning out. I think it was an ambitious project for me and the new techniques I am using are working great. I am starting to get an idea of what the whole inside layout can look like and I think when its done in 50 years it will look nice.

You want a easy way to make evergreen trees?

Glad to help Matt. That is the single most fun thing about this challenge is seeing all the unique ideas come out of the woodwork and also everyone pitching in to help the other guy realize his vision. . .all in 30 days.

I am always open to ideas. But at this point I have a plan for two different style of trees. One is a big pine tree using Ty and Bob Hā€™s filter fabric trees. and then Korm made a tree out of twisted wire that looks like a limber pine which I might try. But like I said I am open to anything.

Doing the Angry Beaver it took alot of searching before I found trees I liked, having the same issue with the Schmatterhorn.

Double post, wierd donā€™t know why

Wow, Devon. Every time you provide updated photos, it gets better and better, The details will make all the difference. Why wait to burn the midnight oil on the last day? Do that now and you can be sleeping soundly while the rest of us toil away.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

OK bit more done. Here is my first ever filter fabric tree. I used a real tree branch for the trunk, filter materiel, flocking made out of coffee grounds, and some green spray paint.

And here is a shot of where it stands now.
