Dan's 2025 MIK - NSC 42' Coil Car

Dan, that has to be the nicest work bench top I’ve ever seen.

Haha! That’s the bar top in the billiard room. Great flat surface for gluing things up and residue easily removed with a razor blade.

Progress on what I am going to refer to as Sill “Banding”. Instead of cutting 1mmx6mm strips with the CNC, I decided to use up some old (like 20 years) Evergreen #149.
Strips softened in a mug of hot water to facilitate bending.

Assembled and applied a primer coat. Working on the Brake wheel and load details now.

Awesome work Dan. Can’t wait to see it in it’s final paint.

That’s a beautiful car Dan.

now that is clever. A toilet paper car . . . :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’ve removed the plastic core and some yards of tape from both the center and outside and sprayed them with multiple coats of Aleene’s Acrylic Sealer but it’s not stiffening the paper as I thought it would (they distort when I pick one up). I guess it’s not really an issue since placing in the car settles them “round”.

Kinda funny how the Acrylic sealer discolors the thermal tape.

Looks to me like Newspaper rolls…

Dan, Did you make the stirrup step and grabrails on each corner from scratch?

I drew them in CAD and cut from 3mm Styrene sheet with my CNC router. A pin vise was used to drill the holes and the grabs I fashioned from 1.2mm brass rod.

Decals are simple for this car.

Love the register roll idea …I think your spot on with the idea myself .

Very cool! The 2 1/4" rolls were given to me but I’ll likely get some of the 3 1/8" rolls for another car.

Dan,

Are you planning to put the cover in it?

No Devon, I find the open loads far more interesting.

After a couple of coats of Krylon Fusion Metallic Dark Metal the rolls are pretty rigid. I wet sanded them smooth and added custom water-slide decals to the car and coil loads as well as “banding” from cutting strips of black vinyl with the Cricut.

Lastly, Coffee stir sticks for the wooden trough liner.

I’M DONE!
