That old video on proper firing was very interesting… although I kept hearing “second derriere” when the narrator was saying “secondary air”.
I have cajoled my lovely artist wife to except a commission from me for a new oil painting of D&RGW 315. I have selected a shot from this falls Night shoot that I hosted for the Chama Fall Steam Special Charter.
This is a work copy to paint from and get the detail correct.
Transferring the sketch to the primed canvas.
And the blocking in the Sky and the background.
The painting is oil on canvas and is 24 x 32 inches.
Stay tuned, I think that I’m really going to like this one.
Cool! I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Some updates on the painting of 315. Wife has slowly gotten more done on the night shot. She spent about 5 hrs today and got a lot of the engine working.
Overview at her studio ( bad lighting ).
And some engine front detail.
Still a ways to go, but it’s coming along.
Nice work!
Dave your lucky to have such a talented wife. That’s going to look great. This painting segment has been a nice fill for the winter months of this thread.
I’m absolutely amazed that detail like that can be done with a paintbrush.
Wow!
Wow,
Between your photos, and your wife’s paintings, your walls must be very interesting.
Ralph
The wife was able to get a few hours of studio time on the 315 painting. Coming along nicely.
I’m sooooooooo lucky…
Beautiful. You guys are both very creative.
Doc Tom
The wife got some time in on the 315 painting. It’s mostly done. She says about 8-10 Hr more.
She’s shooting for entry into a nationally juried show due for submission in mid March.
I like it Dave. It looks like a good painting. I’ll bet she’s enjoying painting.
Absolutely GORGEOUS!! She is well on her way! Wish her best of luck!
I’m curious, what is the purpose of the red undercoat?
Thanks, I’m glad you like it. the reason I use an underpainting color is it helps the painting colors blend together and is less harsh to paint on than a white background. Other colors work also.

Could make a cover for the Gazette!!
And it’s done… TaaaDaaah… Finished up some added detail… Now we wait a bit for it to dry, and then varnish. Took pics today, for entry into the juried show. Enjoy.
Yes Prints will be available to buy, in what ever size you would like.
Aren’t you part of the crew on 315? I don’t see you in the picture…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
She dun good!
Yes Ken I am. But I took the original pic so I’m not in it, and we talked about putting me in it “Oiling Around”, and a consensus was that adding a figure would be distracting from the engine, as one would want to figure out what he is doing in the picture instead of just seeing whats there, and it would make it a “static” view. As it is now, some view it as it could be in motion.
Thanks
Dave, I spent more than 10 minutes looking at it the other night. I almost never spend that much time looking at an actual photo. It was just fun to see what was there , in the dirt, in the woods, on the loco… She did a Great Job! Something to be proud of.
