Craft Store Birdhouse to Scale Building

Very nice building. I can’t go to the hardware store now without checking out the tile section.

Gee, Thanks Kevin!

So, I decided the stove pipe needed to be attached at the top. What I built would support itself with no problem, but would look a little odd not being attached to the building near the top. I fashioned this nice brass ring to attach some braces to. I was sanding it with my Dremel when it decided to take off. I spent 20 minutes searching my basement high and low. It has disappeared. I guess I need to make a new one (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

Once the stove pipe and supports are finished I’m going to call it quits. I still need to build a matching platform shelter to go with it.

Spent another hour searching the basement for the brass ring. No luck, so I made another, and fashioned some legs from some scrap brass. The pipe and bracket need painting before final attachment, but I think I’m done building! Also notice the borders of the signs have been fixed to eliminate the thin red line outside the border. Looks like my prototype sign now.

Just needs some paint…

A quick and dirty bracket for the stove pipe. This was a real challenge to solder together. The cap is a furniture glide that I turned down with my power drill and a utility knife. The pipe is electrical conduit from a sign. That little detail on the end was how it came…

Come on baby light my fire…

I’ve been hemming and hawing about what color to paint the stove pipe. Most of the pictures I can find with buildings that have pipes, they are dull aluminum or chrome. The one on my house is chrome plated. That being said, I still really like the look of black. Since it is already too big in diameter for a single wall pipe I can say it is a dual wall insulated pipe which would allow being painted. In that case I’m leaning toward a satin black.

Any opinions?

Jon, I like that black look in the pictures…

I like the black look. Maybe tone it down a bit and go for a faded black/dark gray look. And paint the brackets too.

Every second or third blue moon, when I sweep the floor in my workroom, I find bits and parts that I had lost. Some I recognize, some I don’t.

The stove pipe they sell in the stores is usually has a flat black finish. Double and triple wall zero clearance stuff is aluminum or galvanized steel or a combination.

I’d go with the black meownself…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Thanks. It will probably be satin black as I have that in stock at work and it’s still too cold too snowy in the driveway to paint outside. I have a nice indoor paint room at work. Just need to move all the stuff I painted white today (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Just when I had made the decision to paint Marilyn suggests a wrap with Aluminum tape. That would give me seams too. I think I’ll try that on a scrap piece.

I went ahead and installed the black stove pipe after painting it at work today. But I also covered another one with aluminum tape. Indoors I still like the black one better but I’ll keep the aluminum one in case it doesn’t look as good outside. Here are the latest pics…

And here is the comparison the aluminum pipe…

Covering the 90 degree bend was a bit tricky…

John both my house growing up and the house I live in now before the stoves abandonment had black pipe. Here is my thinking the black looks better to me. When I see them side by side the silver one says new the black one says old and rustic. With that said maybe some weathering and rust are in order.

Thanks. The look I’m going for is an older building with a fresh coat of paint. I think Black works for that.

Yep I like the black …looks good Jon!

Thanks to everyone who voted at the LSC Darg-N-Brag. Wall station took First Place. Oh wait - EVERYONE who brought something took first place (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Today Wall Station was temporarily placed out on the layout…

Leveling the building really illustrates the grade here. It’s close to 4%…

Once things warm up a bit a track level platform will be installed followed by a platform shelter.

Looks good John!
