Contest proposal

How about this. You call it a Challenge, and not a contest. Nobody votes and there is no prize. You can take turns coming up with the challenge, and the rules.

I’m guessing that most of the folks who entered Mik’s challenge would have done so regardless of any voting or prize.

Quarterly with a two month window would work for me. I might actually enter something.

Well,
I’m a hack when it comes to modeling. It won’t hurt my feelings if I don’t win.

But do you really think MLS’s photo contest fuels wars and discontent?
A modest prize isn’t going to cause any more problems than no prize.

The fun is in the doing…not the winning.
I think a contest would get more people doing.
We had one participant whose entry was his first posts here.
I think the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Unfortunately Ralph there have been minor skirmishes

The fun is in the doing…not the winning.

Thank you Ralph.

Jon,
I could live with it. Better than nothing.

But if we have to run this like a toddler’s t-ball game where they don’t keep score, it doesn’t say much about us collectively, as adults.

Always, Dave.
We can’t talk about the color of the sky without minor skirmishes.
Not you and I. We get along just fine.

Well as someone new to this hobby I feel that with what Mik came up with is great. It gets some creative juices flowing and an urge to build something with little or no cash outlay. I know alot of you more experienced GRR’s must have lots of parts, scrap, junkboxes or whatever. I invite you to come and visit my cabinet shop, been doing it for 20+ years and I have more hardware, materials and misc junk stored here and will probably never use in my life-time.
And a little good natured competition is good for everyone. We all love to share what we can create and we all should like to have imput on what we could have improved on or did different. I know that in time I will submit a build to a future competition, but in the meantime I am learning what others are doing and what can be done with a very limited budget.
There will always be a guy(s) who will think the ‘rules’ or concept of this friendly competition are wrong. And he or them will be the most likely ones to be cheating. But they won’t be cheating us just them selves.
We all love this hobby and are we not supposed to be having fun! I think so. It’s a hobby/passtime not some life threatening disease. Somebody has to lighten up a little.
In the meantime I look forward to more projects that you guys can dream up, using only your imagination and your junk drawers.
Thanks Mik and let’s get rolling with another build/challenge a soon as the last competitors have had a chance to take a break and maybe enjoy a few fine ales while watching trains and relaxing.
Everyone have fun. Right.

I think most of us can agree that Challenge 2 should be Ralph’s choice - date, time, subject, basic rules, etc.

In the meanwhile, a few posts here made me think of a prize for the current contest… a scratchbuilt outhouse. I’ll let the winner pick the scale  (NOT 1:1!)

Mik, I have lot’s of spare wood in the shop. Let me know what scale ya need and will send enough to make a mighty nice SH** House.
Randy

All this ‘divisiveness’ talk made me think of this one as a prototype for the prize… Yes, it’s real. (story is here: http://www.ohiobarns.com/othersites/miscellaneous/il/13-70outhouose.html )

“Perhaps a secret passage leads down to the drain. But some say - No, the puzzle is in just how you must aim.” Be one helluva conversation piece anyway…

Thanks, Mik.
I’m working on it already. Those who wish to participate…should have a good time.
Ralph

Hmmm … soooooo what’s the problem? Those who like to participate do and the others don’t.

Mik loved the ideal to start with. I was going to do something but forgot to bring the stuff with me to CA. I’m not one to scrach build. I am just now starting to do KIT cars for the railroad. how ever this ideal of a challang/contast has sparked me to try. Thank you and everyone that is willing to help and enter. I veiw it like a TV station. Don’t like it change the channel or in this case dont read it or enter it.

I look forward to getting my first project done and up for everyonen to see. I hope I will get good and bad feed back oon it as that will only help me get better.

The only thing is I don’t have a big parts bin yet so I am having to buy my bit and parts now to try my hand at a build. FYI I’m going to try a plow car to clear snow. I just need to get the parts all togather and I have my ideal already. hint: a drover caboose and a aristo wedge.

I’m bashing Wide Radius Switches…new, properly positioned guard rails and new brass throw bars. I have over a dozen new switches to do.
I do NOT have, or use a camera of any sort.
Is this a project that can be entered into such a thread, just to let others know what can be done, or is it too mundane a project, to be of any interest to anyone ?

My wife is pretty handy. Can even run a chainsaw. Anyway, a couple years ago she built her Dad an outhouse(1:1) as a gag gift for his birthday. Complete with seat, TP holder. the works.

Now if I could only get her to help me on the GRR…

It's a GREAT project Fred. And I'd send you my old camera to use, but my 9YO sent it swimming while trying to take pictures of the sea lions at the zoo.

Wait a minute! TP holder? You mean she didn’t hunt up some of the Sears catalogues from the 30s?

Hey,
We’ve come a long way from corn cobs and catologs
Two nails and a string make a fine TP holder

Mik , I had a bet with other forum readers about your explosive attitude . I bet that you would get the
race bit in within four replies .
You did perfectly .
I won .
Perhaps you should try being a bit less touchy .
And your reply to Fred was condescending , why ?
Think before you leap .
I have no quarrel with you , even though I am a descendant of the potato stealers . By golly , having to go to a province of my own country to get shot at really was punishment enough for that .
I think that we now have the attention of enough site watchers (another bet won), so perhaps you should now propose a contest where people vote for the best rules .

Mike , richer and laughing like mad .

ps----- one of my models won three prizes in someone else’s name —after I auctioned it to raise money for charity . I confronted the new owner at the fourth venue with a judge and told him where to look for my ‘signature’ and the bloke stopped it . So I don’t know if it would have won four times .
Funny world , full of funny people .

pps I hope that the spirit of the challenge is entered into , and that it is successful . A good idea .

It was? Only in your mind. Actually I do think it was a great idea... (and yes, I would have gladly GIVEN him my old digicam if he wanted it, had it not ended up at the bottom of that pool.) I avoid Aristo turnouts because they have caused me so many problems... If there's a simple fix, and Fred can show us how, then by golly I wouldn't have to bid so much on the used LGB ones anymore.

That wasn't nice of him, but has nothing to do with the people here. And since you offer no proof we'll simply take your word on it

Likewise, I’ve had clowns who’ve bought my creations then tried to fleece other people with them.
My girlfriend sold a toy that I had made at a show. I saw it on another guy’s table about an hour later. Simply out of curiosity I started to look at the tag… only 5 times what we had sold it for… I must have made a face, because the guy says to me real loud, “That’s OLD!”. I softly replied, “That’s funny, it wasn’t when I made it last winter.”… Everybody at his booth looked at him, quietly put down the items they had been perusing, and left… I just smiled, tipped my hat, and walked away. Occasionally people like that do get what they deserve.

Funny, from here I was just responding to you acting in your usual dismissive manner, and apparently not understanding or choosing to ignore my sense of humor. I was jovially poking fun at your superior, snide, stuffy attitude ---- which has bugger-all to do with 'race', merely YOUR mentality (yes, I've read many of your posts before you left in a snit the last time).... You really should return that other fellow's money. I'm not 'explosive' -- but as I've gotten older I've just gotten to the point where I simply have no patience to waste on people intent on constantly acting like jackasses. You just admitted enjoying trying to bait people. What a pathetic little man. From now on I simply won't bother to respond to you at all.... mind over matter, Since I'll not mind, you'll not matter.

As I said, have a grand day, but since you’d rather not be pleasant, then go piss on someone else’s parade… or up a rope. I honestly don’t care which. You simply no longer exist as far as I’m concerned.

What a very odd person you are .
You cannot even read your own posts properly .

Mike (still laughing)
