Thanks. When I was ordering from Jason, he asked what color I wanted it in. I said I saw on the Roundhouse site that any engine except Sammie could be had in color, but that if he could, I’d like it in dark blue to go with my Bachmann Royal Blue combine. I was pleasantly surprised!
That is a nice liking engine! I’m sure you will have a lot of fun with it! I like the blue.
That is a nice looking engine. You made a great choice and you will be very happy with it.
Today was first steam up day for Sammie, but before I did that, I wanted to install my Summerlands chuffer, fine throttle spindle, and Talgo style couplers.
Took the smokebox off, and found not 2 exhaust tubes, but only 1, but that was OK, because the chuffer that was sent with the engine was a single tube universal for a 1/8 tube. However, what was strange, was the stock one I cut off almost looked like a chuffer. Stock on the right.
First startup, I ran on blocks to get the condensate cleared, and then hooked it up to a 4 wheel Aristo gon loaded with pond rocks on the track. I made a couple newbie mistakes, and only had a 10-12 minute runtime.
Second steam up went a bit better, learned from my previous mistakes, got a better feel for the steam and gas valves, and got a 23 minute run, and I’m sure that will change with different loads and length of train.
Glad you got it steaming. Each time you steam it up it will get easier and and longer run times. You just have to learn to keep the gas down as low as you can. As the boiler gets hot the gas will get higher during the run. You have to adjust it down once it gets to that point during the run. I found you dont need to open the throttle much to get it going well, even on slight grades. Looking forward to some videos.
Sounds like your having fun Mike! Once you get 10-12 hours of run time on Sammie, he will be run in good. He only gets better with more running. On the Roundhouse FG type burner, once the safety lifts, you can turn the gas down to where you cannot hardly hear it going. Then after a few min into the run as things get hot in the cab, it will need turned down again. I usually have to make two quick stops during a run to turn down the gas a touch more as the cab heats up. Also a good time to check the water glass while I am turning it down. Getting good at during this at home is important as it is much harder to hear the burner when you around lots of people at steam ups, with other trains chuff and going past and everybody talking around you. Mike
Thanks Shawn and Mike.
Shawn, did your Henry come in yet?
Not yet. I spoke with Jay the other day and he hasn’t heard anything from Regner yet. I’m hoping soon.
Regner back home in Aurach are being v e r y slow.

I don’t think Regner is the same since the father passed away. I feel he was the driving force behind the company. The amount of offered models has shrunk considerably since Manfred Regner’s passing. Shame, there were some awsome little geared models. Willi should have been kept in the line up, excellent entry level geared engine. Tollerated grades much better than Lumberjack does. Mike
Last Friday, 4/28, was the last time, before a weekend and a day of rain. The Old Man upstairs must’ve decided that since he didn’t give me any snowy precipitation when I wanted it, he’d ruin my Spring weekend. So after dinner yesterday and today, the wife’s been bugging me to run Sammie, I think she likes it as much as I do.
