Large Scale Central

Construction on The Sunny View Line

I’m pretty encouraged by how things are going so far. The moss I transplanted several days ago is looking very good.
Looks much better than the day it was transplanted.

The moss was free. The time involved was minimal. If by some chance it doesn’t survive the Summer, I can always replant.
I really don’t think that will be necessary, but there is plenty of moss up in the woods if I need it.
Ralph

My progress so far today. Rolled out the “sod”. Planted an Eastern Red Cedar to give the “lawn” a little more shade. This area is shaded morning and afternoon, but does get mid day sun. Ralph

That store must be a money maker. The owner has a two story house and can walk to work.

I made a trip to Lowe’s and got a few ground covers and small perennials, Dwarf coreopsis, a few different sedums and thymes, and 2 Montana Sandwort…(whatever the hell they are)…which I didn’t go up there to get, but you know how it is…

How’s the moss?

I never know what to buy at Lowe’s and the sales people usually don’t have a clue either. So I mostly forage around here. I was up in the woods looking for a small Spruce when I found the Cedar with a nice shape. The hunt for a Spruce continues tomorrow. Steve, The moss is doing great. Looking better every day. The 45T will soon hit the paint shop and also Battery/RC conversion. Where’s that article on hardwiring the trucks, Jon  Ralph

I love using using the eastern red cedars. They grow fast, really look good on the RR and they look nice when the wind blows on them. And the Deer hate to eat them. They grow all over my area especially in fields. They do well in all shade as well as all sun.

Go to a real nursery with some pictures and tell them what your after. I favor one of our local nursery's that have 2 gay guys working there that are very knowledgeable with great input! :)

Is that spindly one on the left in this picture the Eastern Red Cedar? I have a bunch of seedlings that look like that. Some are on their third year. Going to try and transplant one this year.

Ralph - I just need some time and motivation to put together the article. I have all the photos and some notes somewhere. Probably do it for my website and post highlights here.

Jon,
That is the Cedar. I have several on the GRR. So far they have been handling being kept small pretty well.

I usually just wander around and find stuff that catches my eye. Mostly ground cover and the dwarf stuff. I wouldn't rely too much on the staff there, it's just summer help. And about all there good for is telling ya where to find stuff and helping to carry stuff out to the car. You'll find out more just by reading the tags on the plants. I used to work with the manager of the local Lowe's Garden section and he knows less about plants than I do............I bust his ass all the time about watering the stuff..........;)

Jon Ya the one on the left is the cedar. They look a lot better then any of the spruces and the needles are more to scale. The biggest problem is they grow fast. You can find them in any abandoned fields.

Today’s task was to back fill behind the depot. The roadbed is quite a bit higher than it was originally. Of course, the wheel barrow tire is low and the dirt is a good 200 feet away.

Four wheel barrows later, one shovel at a time. I still have to pour a pad for the freight dock.

Since there was still daylight left and I didn’t want to mow grass, I put in a road. I used the Paver Base. It looks like concrete now, but won’t after a few rains. It looks pretty good after the dust washes out, but requires frequent maintenance. I’ll pretty much have to keep a bag of the stuff handy. But it does make a decent walking path. Ralph

As only a woman would would know  So here’s how things look as of this morning. Went hunting for a Spruce. Couldn’t find a Spruce that was small enough. I was even willing to buy a couple of Dwarf Alberta Spruce, but couldn’t find any at Lowe’s. Planted another Cedar instead. Transplanted some more moss. At some point a school and a house are planned for this space by the Depot. I think I’ll take a break and relax today… Ralph

Added a few accessories. The fence is temporary. I need to attach some “spikes” to the fence for a more permanent installation. Ralph

I’m still not done working on the “flats”. But the effect is pretty nice and does make an excellent backdrop. Ralph
