Collecting Place Names

One of my favorites and even met someone from there is Toad Suck, Arkansas.

By the way, Coalinga is railroad related since it was originally referenced as Coaling Station A.

SP thought there might be money in hauling coal from that area, and built a branch line into it, and built to coaling stations: A and B… The coal was more like peat and very poor quality. Coaling Station B was further west and abandoned early, but Coaling station A held on. After oil was discovered in the area, the boom came. When the area decided to become a city, they couldn’t agree on a name. So they just ran the words “Coaling A” together and gave it a Spanish sounding pronunciation.

The water in Coaling was so bad that there were three taps in homes: hot, cold, and drinking. I’ve been told that SP hauled water into Coalinga for its citizens for a long time, into the mid-20th century.
