Large Scale Central

Coal trestle

100 years ago, nearly every town served by a railroad had one of these, for local delivery of coal to homes and businesses. There is one in the town next to where I grew up, still in reasonable condition. There are many styles of these, from wood to concrete, but they all had several sections for the different sizes of coal. These pictures are of an O scale model similar to the one I remember.

So, time to build! First I glued up some PVC to an approximate thickness of the walls. Cut them to length, and put some aluminum channel on top to get a feel for proportions. Not too bad.

Cool, not sure if this in Danbury, CT was one, but I suspect so. It is on what was the New Haven Maybrook line and for a time the active Housatonic used it as a bridge to a business on the other side of the road…

Or maybe its just a trestle.

That is a neat thing to model Bob and something we do not see in G that often.

I’m really digging that CamelBack with the sloped tender. It’s giving me ideas.

Pretty sure this is an old coaling trestle located very close to the old ECLSTS in York. I think it was part of the MA & PA (now York Rail).

However if you want to be sure you can talk to this guy cause he was there the day it was taken.

Weren’t You building one on your old indoor layout in Connecticut

Yes, I did start one. Based on Puckey’s Coal in Rockhill for which there wasn’t a bunch of data available. The crazy long thread is here: Beating the Boredom - Brunt Coal on the C.V.S.Ry.
