Large Scale Central

Camp Six

Those are looking great Rick. What is the newest addition to the camp?

Nice buildings Rick, love the shower building

Rick, I’ve been watching this all along, but haven’t dropped a comment in until now. I can’t put my finger on what makes these so attractive, whether it’s the beautiful color, the proportions and weathering are perfect, the choice of wood and the scale of the wood, whether it’s the whole concept or the execution, but all I can say is you put it all together and these are very classy builds and I’d love to have 'em!

I’ve already bookmarked this, so keep posting construction pictures if you have time so I can dream about making these myself. And, what kind of wood is that anyway?

wow my first dupe…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Doug,

well, I guess the shower house is the latest addition but a few others are close behind.

John,

Thank you for the appreciation of my efforts(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif). The wood is Western Red Cedar, 2 X 6 decking from the local building store, left over from re-doing the front house steps. If I have an “eye” for these things it may be because I lived it. As a very young boy I lived in shacks very similar to these in lumber camps in the Northern California Mountains.

A little more progress on the cook shack/dinning hall.

It was asked earlier what I ment by fogging the inside, here you can see the results, just flat black paint sprayed just enough to kill any reflection or shine around the inside that could be seen through the windows. Speaking of which, you can see here how the trim material is undercut so the siding slides underneath the edge presenting a neater finish.

Probably no more till it is finished.

Thanks for taking a look

Rick

PS.

Rooster, I don’t think I ever will understand some of your posts(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Nice detail thinking.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

And when they are done, Rick, I’ll send you my address.

Thanks for building them for me. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Well, about finished up the cook shack/dinning hall here are a couple pictures or her sitting in place.

Still a few details to ad but it is pretty much there.

Rick

We had a little sun shine this afternoon so I thought I would take the opportunity to set out a few of the Camp Six structures, and maybe a loco(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif) just to get a feel of where I am trying to go with this. Made a few adjustments and lined up a few more projects but now feel I know where I am headed with this area.

Thanks for taking a look

Rick

Rick, I’m not liking really the weathering on the yellow structures. The yellow’s great, but to me they just look kind of dirty and not natural. I think you might change the approach to where instead of the dark streaks, you actually change them to something a little lighter than the yellow, a duller, lighter yellow. It might be counter-intuitive, but I’ll bet it would look more natural.

I wouldn’t say anything except that everything else about this is so freaking good.

And, of course, it’s just my (sometimes not so humble) opinion!! What do I know?!

edit…oh, I meant to include, maybe a little darker tone than the yellow just around the base where you would see some “mud splash” and water discoloration from the ground onto the structure.

Rick,

The buildings are awesome my friend. This new layout is coming right along.

Great work Rick. They really turned out nice!

Those are looking good. Is winter taking a break From?

Rick,

Do you have a thread of your overall RR?

Chris

Some good points John, thanks(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Gary buddy, yea it is slowly getting somewhere.

Doug, Winter took a break yesterday afternoon, but is back firmly in place this morning(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)

Chris,

Here is the link,

Heat and Lights for Camp Six.

An old Porter 0-4-0 boiler put into service as a stationary boiler to supply a source to heat the water for the cook shack and shower shack. Of course it is skid mounted for ease of transport whenever camp is re-located. Two Dynamos were added and wired through meters to disconnect panels to a regulator and then fed to the buildings. They provide 35-40 volts DC, enough for a few lights.

An air pump was used to supply a tank to use as an air supply for all the flat tires that are always found on the old beater cars around a logging camp. There is also a water pump to supply the injectors as well as provide some fire protection.

OL’ Pop Johnson is the night watchman that tends the boiler, his favorite part of the job is laying on the whistle chord at 4 AM every morning, except Sunday’s, to roust out the crew.

Never cared for that smoke box door latch but didn’t realize just how bad it really looks on there till seeing it in the photo, gotta change that.

The wood lot that goes with the power plant. They are hard to see but there is a 4 foot cross cut saw and an ax in the wood.

Thanks for taking a look

Rick

Very nice, Rick. I didn’t notice the latch until you pointed it out.

The latch is a bit…ugly.
