Large Scale Central

Building and Bashing Amtrak Equipment

Thank you. I try to respect him. I’ve named him the “boss” and he may not of liked that? Apologies, sincerely. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

Who makes clear scale realistic roof top beacons?

You do.

Pick the right size blinking LED for the model (1:32 would probably be a 3mm round bulb). Then sand the top down flat to the height you want. But you cannot sand into the chip/semiconductor inside.

This is a great tip.

Great tip from Dave , but just to add to what he said take some Evergreen plastic tubing that has the inside dimensions of the LED and cut a small doughnut of it for the beacon base. Paint it and there you go.

Rooster they look a bit foggy. I guess you don’t treat them with model cement (solvent) to eliminate the haze, nor polish them.

Nope …I don’t but if you want them glossy clear just sand them down with finer grit paper then shoot them with clear coat instead of the belt sander treatment I give them. But you knew that already Maynard.

I did. But did the lurkers?

I was wondering how to tackle those. Have you messed with the already flat top LEDs.

Not sure which ones you mean. I have used the bigger flat ones for the roof top spot lights on the theater car.

I think Devon is talking about the ones that have a more diffuse light pattern. They are shaped similar to the “normal” LED, but instead of a convex “lens” at the end, they have a slightly concave lens.

I have used them and abused them on installation Devon. As long as you don’t cut to the metal they will still work. You can even 45 them and tilt the beam if the need arises. Flat head or round head. I got mine at all electronics as I was building the BL2 (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

these

They are 3mm round but are already flat on the end.

I use Lighthouse LED. Just about every type LED one could ever need.

I didn’t quite mean to thank you so many times. I was having a computer problem. But I do thank you (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

I’m going to paint a Great Trains PRR F40PH shell for Amtrak. I’m thinking that the black top version (phase) is the way to go. I never saw any painted with the wave scheme of the Genesis. I obviously don’t know what all the schemes are. Phases I, II, III, IV,… I believe they repainted some later on that were still being used in some kind of tribute scheme?

The trucks appear to be very light. There are lead weights directly over them mounted on the chassis. I believe I could add some down low into the fuel tank if I can get in there. There also seems to be only one wire on just one truck for track power pickup. I believe I will have to add skates and wipers for dependability.

Here’s the PRR paint scheme. I do like it. Nice and crisp.

I like what you did with the pilot on that EMD Dave , great job ! How did you do the red cable ? It looks great .

I’m after a clear beacon that I can install four miniature LEDs inside of. I want to try the Miniatronics simulated beacon. I may have to cast one or cut some plastic container?
