Whuts yer original thought? You never said. It’s probably a lot better than what this lot came up with.

Since no one has heard from Sir Mik in a while… I sorta asked for it, didn’t I? I like the in-put, and I really like the door thing ( thanks Todd ).
My original thought for this challenge looks like it is in a fight for its life against of all things, a Common door ( whoda thunk ).
That’s cause a common door has a ‘scale’ associated with it. Once again the problem of multiple scales 1:13.7-1:32 on gauge 1 track rears it’s ugly head…
Perhaps it would be easier to simply limit the structure size to 12"x12" OR a 144 square inch space
regardless of railroad scale, including one door with a window, I guess red… Within the stated footprint, anyone can model whatever suits them, including period, structure type, etc. Seems to me it would be really fun to see what folks come up with. Regardless of scale, it’s the door with window and the red thing.
Yeah, but how about height?
I was thinking about a small footprint skyscraper
Who mentioned red as the color of the door?
How about this, unless Dave Taylor comes in with his better idea, for which I automatically vote.

A footprint of 576 scale square feet. It can be square, rectangular, octangular, pentangular, or any other sort of angular. Make it as short as you want or as tall as you want.
-
The finished product must include a “front” door, of any fashion, in any color, in the scale that you choose, that would be recognizable as a front door. The “Front Door” must include a window, no size given nor required, but would also be recognizable as suitable for the front door that you have chosen. Said door can be installed as the front door, or be flotsam or junk, or anything in between.
Those are the only two rules.
I hereby revoke the law licenses of all you Sea Lawyers. You are all disbarred!
Steve maybe before I find the nearest tavern and drowned my sorrows in a tall ice cold diet cola, howabout ammending that to “no more than” 576 scale sq ft?
My vote is for Steve’s rules with Vic’s amendment of “no more than 576 scale square feet”
Are we going to limit the purchases to $30 and a bottle of paint? 30 days?

Yeah, sorry, that’s what I meant. And that is the building’s foot print, not the base.

30 days might be a bit short. I have nothing to gauge by. What say you all?

That’s what I was thinking too, but that was what it was for last years build. 2 months? Or from when ever we finally decide on the rules until Jan 1, 2014?
I like Jan 1 2014 finish, as I cannot guarantee being able to dedicate the time for a 30 or 60day period. New Years is doable.
I participated last year and had a lot of fun. Learned alot from all of you too. I would prefer the contest be later this year more towards when the weather stats getting colder and less to do outside, but that s my opinion… Travis
I’m not sure that I want to spend the holidays trying to finish the project. Hasn’t the finish date been towards the end of February the last few times? We are awfully early talking about this in the first part of September.
OK guys… A few points on this build Challenge 2014.

This is, and will be MIKs baby until at which time he relinquishes the reins. If he so does, I will be honored to “run with it” and carry on his torch. I have what I think are a couple of really good ideas for the Challenge, And I started this thread to get some input from you all to see where you stand on what you would like to do, so I could help promote this again this year, should MIK like the help.
-
Traditionally this has been a winter blahs contest, starting after the first of the New Year, and hence the 2014 challenge. I see no reason to change that.
-
I feel that revealing what the Challenge project is ahead of time, would give an unfair advantage to some, Especially those that might join our merry band between now and the first of the year. With the rules traditionally having the “Cost & Time” clause unless you all ready have it section, stockpiling ahead of time is just taking advantage of Pryor knowledge. Remember this is amongst friends.

The Build Challenge is not a democracy! It really is closer to a dictatorship. As it should be. Case in point: How many times has a large body of people made good decisions for the rest of us?
-
I have been under advisement by a couple of fellow LSCers on my Challenge ideas and have gotten positive response, and I feel that i’m on the right track (pun intended). You’r feedback has been really good to have, as it has shown the desires of what you would like to participate in.
-
To pull this off, if so chosen to do so, I will need some lead time. Which is why I started this post in the first place. What you all have given me so far, says that its time to go for it, and put my time and money where my mouth is.
-
I will monitor this for a few days and take in the responses and make the decision to go for it.
-
So I will leave you with a Bachmann response, “Anticipate”. As of today there are 115 days till the New Year.

Oh great, which knuckleheads will make up the rest of the cabinet???
Works for me.
I had nearly two pages of posts to read and I only missed a day!
When 12x12-inches square I did see one problem. What if someone wants to build an outhouse? I’ve never see one that BIG!
I also see a problem with the Jan. 1 deadline. I have a number of projects to get done before the holidays.
A Jan. 1 launch would be much easier to work with. Ir Dec. 26? I know I usually miss the deadline but I have re-arranged my Jan. schedule.
Dave’s got his job cut out. Will be fun to see the outcome. Winter is the perfect time to start this
Doug 12x12 is a maximum, you can build smaller but not larger, at least that’s my take.
Guess I’ll be working on something else till Dave issues our Challenge
