Thanks, Rick. It does show the basic construction of top and bottom frame pieces of 1/4" ply with ends holding them in place.
A little bit more done on this project.
The underside of the flat car is as complete as these cars are going to be. I have kept the underbody detailing to a bare minimum, just enough to look good from a side view.
The finished flat out on the line and in service, the best part of this build is that the only cost in 2020 dollars was a can of spray paint.
Rick, thanks for posting about all this, I hadn’t heard of the kits, and your history of their development was a very interesting read.
Well done, Rick. I always enjoy watching your craftsmanship. The level of detail is a reasonable representation of the real thing yet still useful for daily use on your layout. Looking forward to seeing the completed boxcars.

The line side shed is finished and ready for install on the railroad. This is the first building for the new sawmill area, to be built this winter. The sawmill tabletop will be 7 foot wide and 27 feet long, accessible from both sides. The tracks will run along the outside and buildings in the center so reach won’t be an issue.
A couple more views of the boxcar shed. This is the “box” that was left when I decided to build one of the kits into a flatcar rather than a boxcar.
Just as a side note, those F & CC decals are almost 20 years old, very interesting trying to get them applied, They didn’t want to release from the backing and when they finally did they came off in pieces, lots of fun.
Nice job of repurposing the spare “box” as a line side shed, Rick. Do you add any additional weight to structures like this to keep them secured in place?

Well, not on purpose. Mostly I just keep adding wood till they look right and they usually end up plenty heavy. You got me curious so I just checked this one, it weighs almost 3 lbs. Plenty heavy to stay in place as we don’t have any heavy winds like tornados or hurricanes. All we have to worrry about is everything burning down(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif).

OK, so Landon has the trucks, Jay Kovac has the wheels. Guess who has the body hardware? Yep, when I did my budget 27-foot boxcar, I over-ordered detail parts, so I have something over 50 bags of grab irons, queenposts, brake wheels, etc. etc. If you want to build a car, PLEASE contact me so I can get rid of some of these things – cheap! – before my heirs have to deal with them.
