Birds!

Of course it’s not always birds that we enjoy. There’s rabbits, turtles, and all sorts of dragonflies. Today these deer didn’t know what to make of us.

Bruce, where’s your favorite place to go birding?

We usually go to Occoquan Wildlife Refuge - it’s an old defense site that got turned over to the parks. It’s about a mile square and hardly anyone goes there. Right on the Potomac, too.

The other place is Huntley Meadows, but we don’t go there nearly as much.

While at Philmont, we saw these guys about 20 feet off the trail.

Now that’s cool. Are you going to post more from Philmont?

Yup, as soon as I get them sorted out. I have about 500 photos myself, and between the 3 adults and all the kids, we have over 2000 of just our trek. Here’s another one. We’re at about 10,000 feet. Its sunny, but the clouds are moving in fast, and for the next 36 hours we had hail the size of nickles, and about 2" of snow, with temps in the high 20s. The guys were singing Christmas carols. A bit odd for mid-august.

Bob

That’s quite a rack on the buck on the right. He had better find a place to hide if there is a buck season soon.

The old fardt in Oregun

Got this nice picture of a belted Kingfisher near Carlyle, Illinois. This one was on a wire along the road. Good thing there wasn’t much traffic!

That’s a nice shot, Bruce.

It’s magpie nesting season here, so I get to walk faster if I walk near the wrong tree!

Any guess what bird this is??? …all I know is it leaves one heckova big dropping… Actually we have several intersting birds in our area, this is the most interesting (not my pic):

Red Crowned Parrots, while these look very exotic and rare, these beauties are actually almost daily visitors to to our nieghborhood, feeding in our trees, these guys are REALLY noisy.

They were released from the bird sanctuary that was threatened with fire, they got some back but the rest stayed out and have doing fine ever since. Not my pics, from a parrot watchers website

Heres the last, this pretty little guy is also a common visitor to our garden, the green violet-ear hummingbird I beleive, (also not my pic) this one drives our porch cats nuts because he’s way too fast for them. I really need to get in the habit of carrying my camera when I’m outside, I could get shots like these if I had it handy. Thought you’de like to see what us city folk get to see

Neat photos, Bruce and Vic.

Anyone have a photo of a pelican flying low over the water? It always reminded me of an A-6 on an attack run.

I’ve got to find my photos of the Albatross that followed us for weeks on deployment.

Neat. Haven’t seen that one. Looks like an Acorn Woodpecker.

Tried to get Bruce and Jean connected with Pelicans while they were here, but no dice. Would you believe Monday they were back in the cove right outside the marina.

Honest, 2000 white pelicans on the lake, but not in a place that Bruce or Jean could see them.

Yes its an Acorn Woodpecker, I saw him knocking on a telephone pole in downtown Pasadena last summer.

Dare I ask? You mean that subversive outfit has woodpeckers working for them too? What was he doing on that pole? installing a wiretap??

Naw, he was stuffing a ballot box!

Very interesting article in the paper this morning.
More Urban birds are killed colliding with picture windows than by cats in the US.
The reason is the feeder.
We get four or five (that I know of–when I’m home) that collide with my picture window every month.

They said to move the feeder within 3 feet of your window, so they haven’t reach terminal velocity, or get rid of the feeder.

I love Youtube

Found a couple videos of our feral green Red Crowned Parrots, you can get a good idea in the second one just how loud these little guys are
