I think I need to make 1 more coach for a nice size train. Dennis

You need 3 more coaches!
Nice work…

David,
Three more cars would cost to much $$$. I don’t want to think about the cost of 6 more Aristo Sierra cars. I have enough on hand to make one more coach.
Dennis

Understood and only goading…Nice bash and consist either way!

Hi Dennis:

Excellent project.

The Bachmann Annie loco would be the perfect loco to haul your three coaches as it is the correct period of loco for the wood to steel side passenger car transition period and the Annie loco would not overscale the length of the passenger cars giving the appearance of a longer train. The Aristo Pacific requires around a six heavyweight coaches to look like a reasonable length train.

I had asked Lewis way back to produce his Sierra cars like you have done. No way. Lewis did not want to invest in new molds.

One modellor posted the prototype coach from which Lewis modelled his Sierra cars. It was a long coach like your model. The enclosed platforms don’t appeal to me in the short Sierra car version. Your length of coach goes well with the enclosed platforms.

Norman

Hi again:

How did you build the floors? Join old floors with the old bolsters still in place or did you use a new length of plastic for the floors. How did you join the sides?

Re Lewis, the last word I rec’d from Lewis was that he was only going to produce two of the heavyweight cars for the next production run as he found that consumers no longer had the funds to buy the entire heavyweight train. Of course Lewis has now retired.

The good point with the Sierra long cars is that only a combine, coach and observation need be produced.
A while back, TrainWorld had a clearance of Xmas and other overstock Sierra cars. That would have been a good time to buy some Sierra cars for your project.

The other point is the HLW Long Coaches are basically the same as your project but are shorter by three window sections. Maybe that is why Lewis did not want to produce his Sierra cars as double length cars. So the option for us who are not into these modelling projects would be to buy the HLW Long Cars.

I really enjoyed seeing your project. For those of us less skilled, there is the option of buying the HLW long cars.

Norman

Norman,
Thanks for the kind words. I created the floors by splicing 2 floors together and left the old bolsters in place but ground them down a little. I think I will run these cars behind my Lionel Atlantic. I have 6 or7 stretched Bachmann coaches to run behind the Pacific. Yes I know it is a different scale.
Thanks
Dennis

Hi Dennis:

When the vestibule doors are removed from the end platforms is there any groove remaining on the coach end walls at each side of the end door?
Is there any groove remaining on the end platform flooring?

I would like to order a set of the Aristo Sierra cars but I would like to remove the end vestibule door to run the cars as open platform coaches. Is there any evidence that there was once vestibule end doors after this is done? Do the car ends appear the same as the platform end of the observation as in no marks on the end walls?

Can you post photos of the car platforms and car end walls with the vestibule end doors removed?

Thank you

Norman

Norman, This is the only picture I have that shows the end of the car. The platform has grooves but the car ends may not be objectionable. The Observation car end has some different moldings for the marker lights and fold down platforms. I don’t have a pic of that car without the vestibules in place.

I added some battery powered led light strips. A bit hard to get good photos. They look better in person.

Dennis

An interesting project Dennis: it is great to see some of the projects that arise on this Forum.

It looks good, Dennis.
The lighting looks nice and even along the length of the coach.
Ralph

Thank guys. I ordered some little people on Ebay and will post pics when I get the cars populated.
Dennis

Those turned out super.
I will agree with Ralph that the lighting is very even through out the cars.

The lighting looks good Dennis. If shooting outdoors, take your pictures at dusk while there is still light in the sky. Your lighting will still be bright, bit the soft daylight will help illuminate the outside of the cars. If indoors, just ad a little bit of room light.
