Apologies to anybody

Hey tac, do they have satellite Internet where you live?
Well, yes, we even have runnning water, you'll be amazed to learn.

AND glass in most windows.

Some are even rumoured have an automobile, although I myself have never seen one close up.

But mainly what I don’t have spare is the whacking installation cost, nor the room to put up a 80cm antenna without getting planning permission from the local county building office.

Anyhow, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, as I have 50-75Mbps in my office in Japan, and the best we can get by terrestrial means out here in the sticks is about 1.6Mbps.

Mr Walsham also highlighted a potential SNAFU in the operation - providers going belly up without notice.

Well actually I am totally wrong.
I don’t have a satellite service at all. At all…
I have 3G radio broadband. It is that, that went dead, and now I am back on a WiFi connection.

the down side to satellite is that if you get a big cloud cover you have nothing. I have Sat T.V. and it goes out almost as much as my cable did.

Tac hang in there and sorry for your troubles. hope it don’t happen again.

Mornin, Geoff. Thanks for the commiserations. Sadly, living in the rurals as we do with a remote and unmanned exchange packed full of tempting goodies as far as the gypoes are concerned, we are an easy target. However, there is a bright side. Last year two of them [a father and son team as it transpired] attempted to steal a surpisingly small amount of very important copper sheathing that just happened to be wrapped cosily around a large grounding spike for a 33,000V transformer that they had somehow missed in the darkness. The resultant ten-hour blackout was well worth seeing the pair of them, carbonised beyond recognition, being chiselled off the cable.

Like the chief Fire-fighter at the scene noted, ‘That’s the thing about electricity - you can’t see it, but by golly it’ll give you a nasty sting’.
