I’m not too sure what the ad at the bootom has to do with any of the quotes above it?

Richard Smith said:"In medio virtus est" - dunno the Greek, and their philosophy antedates the translation. This dictum is as true now as it was in ancient times. Richard, at least you, Brian and I "always look on the bright side of life!"
It's called balance.
I’ve never assessed the number of “liberal” vs “conservative” opinions voiced on this forum, though I suspect the result might be biased to the conservative side. It doesn’t matter.
There’s a great American tradition of dissent, going back to at least Roger Williams and highlighted, in our lifetimes, by people such as Daniel Ellsberg and David Halberstam. The latter two had a lot to say that many folks didn’t want to hear. They were accused of treachery and disloyalty for revealing unpleasant truths. The fact that they were vindicated didn’t mute the criticism much.
I’m less concerned than you are about whether someone comes across as “overly negative and even cynical.” A person whose loyalty is unquestioned, but who is also prepared to tell us we are full of the proverbial if he/she disagrees with our latest opinion or bright idea, is a REALLY valuable person to have around.
I like someone who throws out a question, or responds to an argument, that leaves me thinking, “Gee, I never thought of that” or “Yeah, good point”. Where you and I differ is, I’m not too worried about how people say it, and I’m an extremely high-strung, sensitive person who cries easily!

Best quote of the campaign so far- McCain: “Sen. Obama’s tire inflation message is not an energy policy, it’s a public service announcement”.
I’ve gotten a few chuckles with my slowly leaking back bicycle tire: “I’m going to find Obama and have him fill it up!”
Sincerely,
Joe Satnik

Henceforth I promise to treat you with forbearance and the most gentle consideration.

When the price of oil hits $300 a barrel maybe we can use the old wood and coal fired steam engines again for hauling freight rather than passenger sight seeing trips. The steamers should be competitative with dismals on the cost of fuel per mile. And for a bonus it would create more jobs to keep the steamers running than the dismals. Wait until the politicians hear about this. It will be in their talking points.
Funny you should say that John. On the news last night was a comparison of $/btu of heating oil, propane and wood. 10 years ago wood cost twice as much as heating oil per BTU. At $5/gal that is now exactly reversed. I guess my fireplace will get a workout this winter.
Hope your wood pile is already stocked. I’m sure the price will respect the demand.
Yeah, good ole Texas oil man T. Boone Pickens has a plan for alternative energy too. He’s spending a TON of money to let us know that the country needs to break it’s addiction to oil and switch to wind. Surely that has NOTHING to do with the fact that he’s invested $2 billion to build wind turbines, and is working on hooking up a power grid from the wind farms in West Texas all the way to Dallas. The great thing about wind as opposed to oil is, wind is subsidized by the taxpayer dollars to the tune of $25 per kilowatt hour. In other words, we pay his expenses, HE reaps the profit. There’s more. At Pickens behest, the Texas Legislature changed a law allowing him, through his wife and ranch manager, eminent domain rights over 200,000 acres worth of groundwater rights in Roberts, Texas that could bolster his budget another $1 billion. But it’s all about the planet, right?
“But it’s all about the planet, right?”
Who said that?

I’m going to take a page from Ralph Berg’s playbook.
I don’t remember, it’s been so long.
Actually, my source dropped a decimal point or two. I gotta pay more attention. It’s just that it’s too close to payday to pay attention…
Yeah, same reason we end up with questionable food: the poor farmer is too poor to pay attention! hehehe

I don’t use that play when quoting specific figures.
But, nice to see I taught you something.
Is that pay day from an oil company? Or is that just a dividend check?
Ralph
Take a look a John McCain’s “Lexington Plan”. Not too different from the “Pickens Plan”.
