Biggest thing I think we are all learning from all this, is that our so called “Ivy League” schools are full of idiots and crooks. The idiots have some excuse, they are just dumb, but the rest are crooks and are just taught that there is a legal way to steal and it is perfectly acceptable. I don’t know whether that is HOPE or CHANGE, but I HOPE it CHANGES, soon.
Looking around various media sources, I don’t see any significant decline in President Obama’s popularity. Maybe I just don’t pay enough attention to the bleating of the right wing nut cases, but the Gallup Poll information Mike posted above seems to match what most mainstream media outlets, both conservative and liberal are reporting.
More importantly, even if President Obama’s popularity dropped to say 1% approval, with 99% of the poll responders against him, it makes absolutely no difference to his presidency and would have little impact on the operation of our country. If you don’t believe that, just look at President Bush’s numbers. President Bush’s second term began with low approval ratings (~45% approving / ~55% disapproving) and his ratings continued to fall, winding up with some of the lowest ratings (~35% approving / ~65% disapproving) in the history of the office, and certainly the lowest in modern times, were there are virtually constant opinion polls being conducted.
Did the fact that somewhere around 2/3 of the folks polled believed Bush was doing a lousy job make on bit of difference in the way Bush and company conducted business? Did those low approval ratings cause any disruption in the office of the presidency? Any change in his term of office?
Obama’s poll numbers are way better than the last guy’s and in the end make little difference to a sitting president. I think some of the “attack Obama by any means” folks have forgotten that this country is not run on the results of the latest popularity poll. Obama was elected for a 4 year term. Get used to it!
As a post script: I didn’t see the show, but I think President Obama’s appearance on Jay Leno’s Show sets the stage for a huge popularity campaign. Just consider all the opportunities for Mr. Obama to appear on popular media venues such as Leno, Letterman, American Idol and U-Tube. That kind of exposure will certainly help divert attention from the mis-management of the current fiscal meltdown or any future government problems, and will help to ensure that Mr. Obama is re-elected to a second term. Great thinking on his part!

I suppose in our MTV, American Idol generation, Obama is the perfect celebrity. But he is no leader, by any measure.
"Polling data show that Mr. Obama’s approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama’s net presidential approval rating – which is calculated by subtracting the number who strongly disapprove from the number who strongly approve – is just six, his lowest rating to date.

Overall, Rasmussen Reports shows a 56%-43% approval, with a third strongly disapproving of the president’s performance. This is a substantial degree of polarization so early in the administration. Mr. Obama has lost virtually all of his Republican support and a good part of his Independent support, and the trend is decidedly negative." Wall Street Journal another right-wing bird cage liner
Repeat the mantra enough and you begin to believe it yourself.

One of the great lines from Casablanca occurs when Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) is confronted by a regular patron of his gambling bar, the corrupt Prefecture of Police, Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains), who is threatening to extort Rick by shuttering his establishment. Rick asks, “How can you close me up? On what grounds?” Renault responds, “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!” (As Renault makes that faux pronouncement, a croupier hands him a wad of cash saying, “Your winnings, sir,” and Renault quietly says, “Oh, thank you very much.”) Sound familiar?
