Large Scale Central

Again with the duke?

I thought this thread would be John Wayne related....;)

Ya know …Between the problems Shad is having with the forum and all the be’hitching going on …it wouldn’t surprise me if one day he just up and says “the hell with it” and pulls the plug, which would be very bad no matter whether your active or not on the site. So don’t gripe too loudly least another good site goes away. This is a small enough nitch hobby as it is and does nobody anything good if it too does the GSM kamakazi dive…

Victor:

I only half agree: I do believe it could be somewhat detrimental to the hobby to see a site like MLS go away.

–But–

The demise of a website run by a computer ‘expert’ who continuously makes poor choices and decisions about the forum software, who alienates paying folks by telling them they “. . . have the wrong computer . . .,” and just doesn’t seem to be bothered by all the problems and outages that his choices cause, might have the effect of reinforcing the other LS websites that are run by folks with somewhat less computer expertise, and who are living and operating in the current century.

Just ask yourself how many websites you go to that are fraught with problems like occur on a regular basis at the site under discussion. A website that is run like that might deserve to go away in favor of websites that are more competently run. That might actually have the effect of better serving the hobby.

Happy RRing,

Jerry

You mean kinda like how Farcebook does?

Partially true. When JdK threw a rod and decided to pull LSOL, the world didn't end, and other sites sprung up literally overnight to take its place. Same thing would happen if MLS or LSC went away. The niche would be filled. Here we have all our archived posts back to 2002, so the information lost would be fairly large; other sites don't deem archives valuable, so its already gone.

YMMV

So true, but none of us have allowed or will allow ourselves to be put in that position again. Now, I agree that a lot of this is just the advancement of communication with technology of the times. But like other things that have happened in the last 15 years, many we will never forget.

It seems like things in life always change as back when Jon stripped a gear and dropped the train website without warning anyone, I felt lost. Most did I am sure. Then along came MLS to the rescue with put many of us back in touch. Grin… Big grin… The bigger MLS became, the bigger problems. I think it is out of hand now and sure glad I jumped ship er train to LSC long ago. Without moderators this site does much better to maintain an even balance without the nasty that occurs frequently over there. Attitude and egos are rampant too. I hope that LSC outlasts them all but I hope they last a long time before their end.

Would I host a model train website ? Not on your life not even if it meant big $$$. I appreciate those that do this for us.

My usual two cents is only in my mind and of course yours might be different.

Off to my new hobby, metal detecting on the beaches of the Big Island Hawaii. Good exercise and little pay but the weather is great.

Thanks Dad!

I think we should bear with the problems and be a little forgiving with problems with the site.
MLS is a great site. A great service is done here.
We should thank them for all of the effort in keeping this wonderful site up and running.
I for one say THANK YOU! Thank you for all of your efforts for helping us and the Large scale hobbie.
David
PS Thanks again…

Bear in mind that if Shad decides he doesnt need the grief and actually ever did the plug, where do you think all those attitude and ego folks ya’ll are complaining about will migrate too? Hmmmm???

I have my own vested intereset for the sites well being as I have all my pics, some going way back, are hosted there. Those pics are links to topics now on the other 3 LS sites and 2 O sites, if it got shut down and I lost that, I would have to say “game over” as there is no way in hell I would hunt down and repost almost 1 meg of photos and then re-edit hundreds of pics on several dozen topics to update the photo links, some topics would just be DOA as after a period of time one cannot re-edit them on some of these forums.

I just keep remembering the debacle at GSM and the fallout from that, sure GSC rose to fill the void, but its a much more sober place than the madhouse ever was…

You can say that again, especially after they got rid of that ‘tac’ guy - the ‘trouble-making saboteur from another site’. Dang it all, he called model trains ‘toys’, y’know, and the red-box crazi- sorry, fans, ‘foamers’. Whatever next?

Well, thankfully, the fans of GSC will never know.

We can only hope to LSOL :)

Victor, I feel your pain on the hosting thing. Several years ago I decided to buy hosting from a large ISP rather than renewing my 1st Class. I moved everything from the MLS servers to my host. I fixed a few posts, but wasn’t willing to fix everything I ever posted. Now it no longer matters since the archives over there were dumped. Also, just about that time I move over here. Haven’t missed the place much at all.

All;

I think it is easy to set back and complain about everything, but it is a different story if you are the one that is the fixer.
I have no complaints just praise for people that keep a great site running.
That is more than a job in it’s self.
Thanks for all of your efforts in keeping things running…

As with any endeavor, when the ratio of complaints to enjoyment gets too high, sites shut down. Its pretty easy to complain, but its very difficult to keep 95% of the people on your site happy. A few grumblers can ruin it for the majority.

I got it today.

I guess P…p happens.

Happy to be part of the 95%.

Vic,
You might want to migrate those pics back to your 'puter and burn them to DVD.
Just a thot.
Anything can happen to these sites.

John, I already have most all of them on the home comp’fuser but I plan to backup everything onto a flashdrive very soon.

Saturday’s treat from MLS: (just a few minutes ago)

That’s a very informative error message. :o
