I got an explanation from the DRGW list as to why the idler flats didn’t have stake pockets.

Hi Doug

The idler flats were only used between pipe gondolas when handling long
pipes. They were not intended to carry any loads at all. The idler flats
were converted from other type of cars not needed anymore. To put on stake
pockets would have increased the costs without much benefit. Rio Grande had
a surplus of cars for other loads at this time.

As soon as I can get a day off from work I plan on doing some stuff. Since the hurricane I have been on mandatory overtime Ugh. The cash is great but still would rather play with trains and see the family.

thanks to all for the explanations.

Thanks…That actually seems logical. They serves more as “spacers” then!

If Bob is building idler cars.

Are we going to see them in action?

you want him to make a video, where we can see the idler flats, while they are idle?

How about a video when they aren’t idle?

I dug up some of my dwindling supply of CDS dry transfers, and gave the revenue flat a quick numbering/lettering.

Perhaps seeing idle flats in real use might help the discussion

PS wish I knew a way to embed videos on this forum

Usually I just place after and it works fine…Not with this one…

I believe he is building a float terminal and ferry landing.

You have to cut =youtu.be off the end of the URL

Now that’s a heck of a train!

I’m sure that’s what 487 is supposed to sound like, but I almost miss the asthmatic sound of the broken whistle it had for so long…

They must have dragged out every car they had in Chama Yard! Great video!

Really great video ! Thanks for posting… I must get to Chama when the train is running ! I’ve been thru there twice, . . but in the off season :frowning:

A few of months ago I bought a 1994 vintage Aristo-Craft Pacific. The motor block and valve gear were in rough shape as it appeared as though a petroleum based lubricant was used. As the new motor block was not available, I ordered the parts for the old one. The last few parts needed were received last week. After restoring the locomotive, today I installed battery power and radio control in the tender. As we are enjoying some unusually warm weather for this time of year, and today may be the last day of it, I took the locomotive over to Fred’s to test it.

It ran fine, although I did have problems with the pilot truck in some of the tighter radius switches. There are a few minor things left to do, but for the most part this one is done.

OK…after a year I have finished off the Triple Combine I started…thats Project No4 for those keeping score…
