Large Scale Central

A diseasel for the AV? Maybe... Loooking for ideas

Allen, You are gonna build what you want but are you sure that NYCTA unit is Diesel? I see it running on third rail electrified track and do not see an exhaust stack?

Chas

Here is the small diesel I designed for one of the roads that is eventually absorbed into the Freedom Central:

It uses the cab and some accessories from a scrapped steam engine on the line.

No, I don’t think it is a diesel - however it was about as close to the general layout of the existing parts as I could find, and as such was useful to help folks visualize. Just as a camel is often called “a horse built by a committee” this thing will have several Alco/GE “fathers”, and as such, is a ‘camel’ since major surgery probably isn’t in the cards. Since you didn’t like that pic, you’re welcome to pic any one of these:

Allen, I liked the first one just fine, and of course all the others you are drawing some inspiration from as well.

Chas

Here’s where we are (no pix at the moment)

  1. Assembled the set of pilot steps that John sent
2.Extended the frame/front platform a bit, it’s now roughly 1-3/4" (42 scale inches) from the radiator to the rear edge of the front steps another inch to the front of the pilot - giving us about 5 scale feet of empty air between the pilot handrail and grille louvers.
  2. have scrounged a sunbeam type can headlight for on top of the hood since there is no space for one (ala the Bush terminal, above.)
  3. Won a pair of horns and diesel bell on fleabay
5 started to cut a hole in the hood to fit the exhaust stack w/ smoke generator that John sent - roughly 1/3 back from the nose.
  4. Chased down some pix of Alco cab interiors. have several of the engineers cubby, but nothing on the rest of the cab layout. Quite frustrating, actually.

Dont forget to leave enough room between the trucks for a small fuel tank

Is apparently a GE diesel/electric for work trains somewhere in 40 to 50 ton range http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=79338 and http://www.thedieselshop.us/NYCTA.HTML and http://www.hopetunnel.org/subway/nyct/loco.html and here's 58, http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=138

Would need to be diesel for when track is turned off for maintenance.
It does apparently have 3rd rail shoes in photos from pages above - would make sense like New Haven’s old EMD FL-9.

A couple progress pix.

Te next step is figuring a way to attach the sideframes to the motor bricks, since I don’t have the factory brackets. Small wood blocks and screws should work

I like the front porch.
I’m trying to remember what those brackets look like, but I’m drawing a blank.
My shop is still torn up and everything is still in boxes.

Neat stuff!

Jason - Your drawing looks a bit like this

Geezuuz Jon is that thing coal fired?

Oh nevermind I see it

Great

For those who are curious, the frame is built up from 4 main sections spliced. There is also a .020" x 2" brass bar bridging the joints for strength. I may try to figure out how to targa mount the rear coupler and perhaps attach the rear steps to the truck as well. - John, I think the truck frame mounts are U shaped, about 2" wide?

First coat of color

We have a little progress to show…

This afternoon’s projects are to install window ‘glass’, and work on the trucks…

Too hot to work outside most of this afternoon, so I made even more progress… I used 1/2x1/2, plexi and 1/4" blind nuts to make the truck bolsters - not pretty but serviceable. I still need 4 more truck springs. I thought I had them, but can’t find them.

mounted to the floor. It rides a little high, but I’m not sure how I’m going to fix it, yet.

I decided to raise the cab about 3/16" I think it looks better

Other side–

Still to do: wiring, weight, rear pilot and steps, front coupler, railings. Does anybody know what year visibility stripes on walkways were mandated?

Things I’m looking for: 4 truck springs, a fan motor for the smoke unit, a set of pilot steps, and a bunch of railing stanchions. But I do have progress pix! That pulley I broke came in handy

But no kludge is EVER complete without duct tape!

A bit over 5-1/2 pounds is what the Aristo FA1 weighs, isn’t it?

A brief road test

However, it doesn’t like the current state of my trackwork… I need to go after another bucket of boney.

Anybody got ideas on how to make it belch heavy black smoke and sparks like an Alco?

Mik, great job on the loco…

I know of a way to make belch black smoke, but, unfortunately, you can only do it once…

Lemme do some digging this weekend.
