I guess it must be an American thang, but in all my years service, I was never thanked once by anybody.
I never thought about it in UK, to tell the truth, it’s just something that doesn’t ever get said here.

I think it is something that was started after Desert Storm, to try to make up for what happened during and after Viet Nam. When I was a kid, all of the adults had had military service, so it was no big thing…
I still remember the signs in Norfolk, VA, “Sailors and dogs keep off the lawn.”
First coupla times it happened to me, it kinda caught be off guard, but I’ve met quite a few other Nam vets that way. Good conversation starter, relating experiences from over there.
Thank you for your service Boomer. And you never know. Out of the blue they change. It’s like a ship came down out of the sky and replaced them.
Happy Veteran’s Day gentlemen

Boy have you got that right.
My dad served in the Army during WW2 and my brother in the reserves. He came close to active duty during one of the short Israeli wars but his unit wasn’t’ t called. I didn’t get the opportunity as I was in school during Vietnam and my number didn’t come up. I have a deep respect for all of you that have served both in wartime and peacetime.
I’m one who views things from a different perspective. Spent four years in USAF as a Security Specialist before realizing I was a part of the problem. Got out and never looked back. Today socialism/communism/fascism are on the rise and the military is being used to advance that agenda. As Bastiate wrote, the law has been perverted not to protect the rights of man, but to empower the elites and enslave the individual. Drone attacks on innocent civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries around the world simply bear out the decline of the western nations as our “leaders” use the worn out mantra of fighting over there to keep us free over here. Freedom is just a catch phrase sound bite to appeal to the low information voter. Meh, it’s all BS. Guess that’s why I play with model trains… to escape the lies that i constantly hear.
Anyways, good reenactment speech of “War is a Racket” by Smedley Butler in link below…
No politics on LSC. One warning.
For all you ex-grunts out there, I’m sure you’ll recognize this gourmet item…
Ken. Oh yah. Where did you dig that up at? You didn’t bring that all the way home with ya , did ya?
BTW when they would boil them, they made great hand warmers. They would last the better part of an hour.
The cans of Peaches and Fruit Cocktail were never unopened, always the first to go, Other then the Chocolate, off times missing in action, by someone up stream in the supply chain.

Wow! Thanks for verifying the story I’ve told my family about using C4 to heat my “C’s”. I STILL have a P38 attached to my key ring! Used to take the used, shorter cans (for a stove)and use the P38 to cut along the upper and lower rims to form a :wind screen". Roll up a pea size ball of C4 and have hot food in a few seconds!

I gotta lot of strange looks talking about that too. Took apart quite a few Claymores to get enough for a few meals…

Steve, I remember a store in Norfolk, VA with a sign on the door, “No dogs or Sailors allowed”.
Of course this was back in 1967-69 when I was aboard the Forestall when she was in dry dock after the fire.
I know I’m a day late, but thanks everyone for your time out of your lives to make our country as free as it is.

I just tuned in. Ah, the memories of trying to trade off Ham and M…r F…rs for some boned chicken. Even if we were able to warm it, it still tasted like S…T. As for the P38 can openers, why, in Gods name, were there only four of them packed in a case of twelve C rations? Oh I forgot, Navy wisdom.

Ken,
I had to carry a brick or two of C4 as part of my “job”. Always had plenty.

However, leaders the world over, at that time, were basically using the socialist theory to get their countries out of the depression. I agree that big business and the elite classes made the Great Depression possible. What I don’t agree with is that our present leader is a socialist. I believe he is just copying from FDR. After all, the so called recession of 2008, was more than just a recession. The media and government preferred not to use the “Depression” word.
