PS:
Couplers should be rusty, I believe they are Not to be Painted, that might hide a crack.

Well, if its rust your after, soak it in vinegar, with a steel wool pad in it for color.

True, but cast iron would be nearly black when its new, and then it would rust to a dark rust colour.
The couplers I see up here are very rusty. It would be nice if I could find some way to chemically make brass look somewhere between fresh rust & old rust, but I don’t think its feasible. Blackening, while not a true analog for rust, is the next best thing. That way I can do a light coat of paint on the coupler to get the color I want, and if (when) it scratches, its black underneath.
Anyway, the Birchwood Casey sample I ordered came in today, and here’s the result:
Here’s a prototype photo, for reference:
that looks great from here. I wouldn’t go too crazy about just some rust! (color)
Everyone has a different idea of what color it should be depending maybe on where they’re from?
Also, fresh rust is lighter than the patina you get with a rusty surface that has weathered some.

Burt
Is the black part a paint on product ,or did you just dip it in a solution?
Do you know if it will take paint or weathering chaulk?
Great looking just like that.
I dipped it in the solution, scrubbed it under cold running water, then repeated.
