Very nice. Do you have a couple of pictures of the completed pump house?? I would love to see it.

Doc Tom

Your roof filled in well, must have been a little tricky getting it to come out that well.

My completed pump house is over in the build pictures if you’d like to take a look:

The pump house thread is great. I really like how that is all coming together.

On the combine roof I used what I had in the scrap styrene box and plan on covering the roof with fabric to hide all the seams.

Doc tom

The Southern RR combine car has progressed a little further. I was able to cover the roof and place alternating green and frosted white glass in the clerestory windows up top.

Red siding and window sills have been applied to one of the car sides.

Still to be done:

Build up windows and finish the other side.

Figure out some way to get “quarter round” strip in to the corners of the model.

Thanks for looking.

Doc Tom

Doc, on my passenger cars, I just took some square basswood and sanded it into a quarter round.

Evergreen sells quarter round in plastic in various sizes.

Caboose Hobbies carries it:

Thanks Ken and Dave. Both are very good ideas. I appreciate the help and advice.

Doc Tom

Tom, that’s looking very good.

Hobbylinc also sells the Evergreen stuff…but I must warn you, you might find a few other things to buy as well.

Thanks Boomer and Bruce. The matte-board was cheaper than sheet styrene on this project…the walls are built up from three layers to make them strong. A lot of material was needed in this large model. I think I have about 55 dollars invested in it so far including the donor B.mann coach, Kadee couplers and the matte-board.

I am considering an all styrene build for my next project and appreciate the tips on where to get it.

Thank you all for your help and encouragement.

Doc Tom

Doc Tom, yes I would hate to think how much my scratch-built passengers cars cost me. But I don’t scratch-build to save money, I scratch-build to have exactly what I want. It seams we are on the same page there.

Looking good there.

Well put Dave. Thanks for the input.

Tom

As one Doc to another, I’m impressed with your ability to create a great passenger car for a very small investment. I can’t imagine how much it cost me to build my first passenger car in 1:20. I think your approach should encourage others to take the leap and build a car in 1:20. Styrene would be an excellent choice for your next coach.

Doc Watson

Hello,
Thanks for the nice note. I do agree that styrene gives a much better surface quality to the models.

By the way what type of doctor are you? I am a family physician that works for uninsured in a public health clinic and a rural health center.

I think that Don is more of a Doc Watson than a Doctor.

Looks good Doc!

Doc, go to your local sign maker and see if you can buy sheets of plastic from them in the thicknesses you want. Up here for around $15.00 I can get 4’x8’ sheets

Build is looking great

Doc Tom,

Bruce is correct. That handle was given to me by my ex-coworkers and train buddies and I haven’t been able to shake it since. It became my alias on MLS. When I first joined LSC, I even suggested going with Don since you were already going by ‘Doc’, but several friends who were already members said they wouldn’t recognize me if I didn’t use my old handle/alias. If it’ll make you and others happier, I did work for 20 years as a research geophysicist. These days you couldn’t even get a job in that field without a PhD. So there you are.

Or check the yellow pages (that big book that mysteriously shows up at your door once a year!) for plastic suppliers. I found for thicker stock .040 + the 4x8 sheets are really cost effective, but when it comes to smaller strip stock you can’t beat Evergreen for availability and sizes. The local plastic supplier that I found carried 4x8 sheets down to .010".

Thanks Dave. This is a very good idea. We have a sign maker near by that I should visit.

I like your handle. It has a nice sound to it. Research Geophysicist makes you a ‘Doc’ in my book.

Very good ideas on procuring sheet styrene…definitely will be used in the next build. Thanks fellas.
