I am going to build an early American gas station, either for Fair Haven or Castle Shannon. I belongs in Shannon, but where it belongs, I have a mature boxwood I am afraid to move. So it may end up being located in Fair Haven. Since I worked today, with a nasty head cold, I don’t plan on making much progress tonight. I may just set up the saw to start running off the clapboards for the siding.

Love it! I have plans to build a very early Texaco station one day. Got the trucks and the tankcar, want some pumps like those, will look for them next time I’m in the 'States! Good luck with your build - you bet I’ll be watching. Cheers!

Today I finally got moving on my build. I started cutting ceder for the siding and the pillars for the overhanging roof. I also laid out the front wall on some thin plywood. If course, with this nasty cold, I have to stop periodically and cough up a small furry animal or two, but things are finally moving around here. Later I hope to upload some pictures.

I didn’t know that napkin plans were a must. As a copier repairman, I bring home a lot of used paper for my own personal use. So my plans are on “recycled” scrap paper.

Since I usually work from plans in my head, the written down plans are more for me to check measurements and do math, to fine tune my design.

I am also using left over plywood to form the structure of my walls.

And my ceder siding is made from left over scraps of fence boards, donated to the P&CS by a friend of mine.

Progress so far.

Now that the finished height has been finalized, I will cut the plywood to the proper height, tomorrow, once the glue has dried all the way. Then I will know exactly what size to cut the other 3 walls.

Looking good. I think we could allow recycled paper. as long as its not a good piece of paper.

Since I didn’t post an update last night, I figured I had better do so tonight. No progress at all was made tonight, my cold and my laryngitis want to go to bed, and they will be taking me there shortly. But the 4 walls are coming along. The front wall has been sided, and the other three are in progress.

So, I have been trudging forward with my build, despite my cold. This weekend I finally got all of the siding installed on the main walls. I had to clamp my siding onto the walls beyond the reach of my clamps. I am sure others have had this issue on other projects. My solution is simple, I rest the eraser of a pencil onto what needs clamped and then clamp the pencil into the wall. this provides pressure to the siding to hold it in place, and the eraser is soft enough so as to not mar the siding.

The door, the seed of this project, also got installed this weekend, as did the frame for the transom above the door.

Next I need 4 windows, 2 for the front wall and one each on the side walls. So I cobbled together a quick and dirty window assembly jig.

And then I pre-cut my window parts and just assembled windows. To keep the window from sticking to the jig, I rubbed the jig with paraffin wax before I started assembling the windows.

I wanted the basic box assembled by the end of this weekend. But I have had enough. I still need to put on the window and door trim, and build and install the back door.

Maybe tomorrow I will get the box assembled. Wednesday is my club’s meeting, and I want something to take for show and tell.
