Quest for smoke

Eric Reuter said:

I checked with Harbor Models a while back, and they do not recommend pulsing. They said it would void the warranty. I think the fan is probably too large anyway.

Have a friend that put one in used way to much juice had to put another bat. in just for smoke.

That’s one reason why I run track power, a good smoke unit can use as much power as the motor, don’t have to worry about stuff like that.

Anyway, the design to control the heater when stopped is continuing.

I received the Super Chuffer from Henning’s Trains. Here is a video of it in action.

The chuffing looks great, but the idle fan speed is higher than I’d like. It’s about 3 V. I confirmed with the designer that it’s hard coded. He explained that some O scale smoke units require that much voltage to get the fan moving, so it was a compromise.

It could be dropped with diode(s), but not without affecting the speed during chuffing.

Oh yeah, that idle is way too high… in general you want almost nothing unless you have the dynamo feeding into the stack.

Or you could blame it on the engineer leaving the blower valve open.
