There are lots of good suggestions and no wrong answers. It’s going to come down to your sense of aesthetics, available time, and risk tolerance. I frankly like Trainman’s idea of using that thin area for an industrial area or staging yard. It will minimize work for you, remove the risk to your trains, and open opportunities for future projects.
