Crown Willamette Paper Co. #3 tower skidder-build log

That looks great so far.

Got the frame welded together tonight. It weights in at 6.9 lbs. so far. The prototype weighted close to 300 tons and took 2 locos to move it. at this rate it will take at least 2 if not more to move.

now on to riveting the frame, which is roughly 800 rivets, this may take a while. to be continued…

I’m so proud of my grandson. Can’t wait to see this thing when it’s done. To think your related to me. grandma Joyce

Looks great, Aaron!

More frame work done: been doing some rivet work, 823 rivets so far. I think I have gone insane lol

Not that I know. You can resize them on your computer, then upload them to your freight shed. Then edit your post and replace the photos. Ralph

The photos are resized now

the boiler deck is also installed, the boiler is sitting in place in these shots. I have also started to install diamond tread plate to the deck

and here is how it looks at this point

now on to the moving trucks and mounts. more to come soon…

This is looking sweet!

Update: this thing is getting so big I decided I should work on moving trucks, so time to build some U-hauls hehehe :D. Here is a picture of the starting supplies

and here is the finished frame sitting on the trucks, which are currently being modified

and here is the end of the car, need to finish the brake rigging yet

work on the other moving truck and mounts are next. more to come…

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, Hope Everyone has had a great day with family and too much food  : here is another update, the 2nd moving truck is finished

here is the pair together

here is the special rooster for it, the prototype used a steel beam with a long air line to connect the cars. Here I used an LGB disconnect rooster with a pair of gladhands attached to a brass rod and installed under it

and here it is attached to the cars

now on to the mounts on the skidder frame. more to come soon…

update: the moving trucks and mounts are done (knock on wood) :D. here is a picture of the finished trucks

another of them under the frame. looks funny having narrow guage moving trucks under a standard guage machine

a view from the top, we now have a very heavy moving flat

now that thats finished on to the heart of the beast, which should be much fun, hehe. here is a mockup of the gears and the location of them

next boiler plumbing and drum mounts. stay tuned…

Aaron, nice work, looking good…

That really looks great Aaron. Do you have any idea how they lifted that beast on to and off of the moving trucks ?

Thanks Everyone! Jon, still researching that, but from what I can gather there were small, vertical steam engines, one on each corner to lift it. they stacked timbers up under each corner, then used these vertical engines to lower what looks like outriggers down on the stack, then when trucks were removed it was lowered back down on the timbers. in this photo it shows the setup

I would think that would be a lot of weight to lift with this setup, even though it would have been done before the tower was attached, it would probably still be 150-200 tons to lift. Still researching, but if I find more out on it I will post my findings here

Everything looks awsome so far. lad to see another logging fan out their.
