Greg I dont get any pop ups or ads on FB. The only time I see an ad is when a friend likes something, like walmart. Other then that I don’t get ads or pop ups. You can avoid that by not following certain people but you still stay friends. Nothing says a group cant be started that deals with in depth discussions. (I think the majority of people are not into the in depth discussions. This could be another reason people on FB shy away from forums) In depth discussions do occur on FB but the biggest difference is they end quicker because of the amount of people that respond in a short period of time, unlike forums where discussions will go on for days. Yet that same discussion on FB can go on for a day, with more responses. Build threads are harder to do but what I do is set up my own page and then share that to the groups. Its not for everyone but most of the haters have not given it enough time to see the potential.
I find forums have too many categories and its difficult for me to always check, even harder on a smart phone.
I think you can reach more people on facebook and I bet having your knowledge would be great to have on FB and maybe get more people involved with in-depth discussions.

from my point of viw, facebook has a big advantage: since my wife is booking faces, i got much more time at my free disposal.
for us elderly modelers i see a disadvantage in facebook. it’s got no memory.
to me forums seem to be easier to find year old topics, that i need to reread now.
Interesting… too many forums… I see it as the ability to choose what I want to read. But if my main internet tool was a phone, then I believe I would be a FB fan.
I went to the USAT FB site… mostly pictures of a vendor’s stock of trains. We just got a post about TrainLand/Bachmann… but when I went there most of it was advertising… that’s OK, it’s Trainland’s site… it’s there FOR advertising. The whole FB page is an advertisement to me.

I’m now on three Farcebook G sites. Garden Railways, G Scale.Net and G Scale Swap and Shop. I have actually in the last 6 months bought more stuff on the swap site than I have on eBay. Am also on several car porn pages.

OK…since you admitted to being a social junkie and I’m guessing you are searching for the best junk you can find. I’m no help because I’m a huge disbeliever in social media. Most of the junkies got their first fix here or only a few other large scale train forums back in the day. I’m sticking with the hood I grew up in (guys like Shawn moved out of the hood but come back to visit time to time).
Guess I’m getting old!

Greg your also going to the wrong pages on FB. What did you expect when you go on a dealers page. What they had for lunch? If you want info etc you need to visit the train pages. Not the dealer pages. There are pages for everyone from 7/8ths scale to Gauge 1 and everything in between. I see a lot of these dealer,s like RLD, posting on the FB train pages, helping people. Maybe the reason why we don’t see any of the dealers posting here, is because when they try, they get read the riot act. I know its not for everyone but to say you see it as advertisement tells me you have not spent much time looking at FB or you only spent time on dealer pages. When you say advertisement we think of stuff that we have no interest in, like saving 15% on Geico. If your not interested in the dealer pages you just un-follow them and they wont show up on your feed.
For me I don’t have the time to sit on a computer picking through each forum topic etc… (when I do have some extra time I enjoy the forums but like you I only concentrate on a few of the topic like the General or modeling sections). Using the phone and FB takes little time and the process of posting pictures and responding is much faster and easier. You can also choose what you want to read on FB and its a lot less clicking, just scroll down until you see something that catches your eyes. Plus I like how it reaches out to more people train and non train people. To me that’s good for our hobby and one of the main reason I enjoy posting to FB, it reaches out to more beginners or people wanting to get into the hobby.

In reply to your first paragraph, yes, I went to a dealer’s page, and that is kind of what started this… a DEALER posted in the GENERAL forum about “Bachmann”, but clicking the link just got me the normal FB “stream of consciousness” drivel. Besides needing to have all my shields up when going to FB, I had to try to find what MIGHT have been of interest. Next time Trainworld, post the link to the video also.

So, instead of being able to go DIRECTLY to the MOTIVE POWER forum, that I am interested in, and read about just that topic, I should go to a FB page and SCROLL until I find something I like?
So, our minds must work very differently. I can concentrate on the topics I am interested in immediately and then see rapidly which topics have been updated… you scroll until you find something you like. Any time you want to compete on which takes less time, let me know, but it should be obvious.
So when you talk about “For me I don’t have the time to sit on a computer picking through each forum topic etc” but you can scroll and scroll until you find something you like just seems like a huge waste of time. Wanting to read or learn about specific things is WAY slower and/or IMPOSSIBLE with FB.
I can get what I am interested in right away, and you are scrolling scrolling scrolling on a HUGE SINGLE thread/forum effectively.
This is why groups that look for specific information, like a 1940 Chevy go to a forum, not FB. This is why if I want to learn about DCC or post something helpful on DCC I go to a forum, not FB.
Each has it’s purpose, and clearly what you want from the hobby is more entertainment than specific information, since FB is not organized in any fashion except for who posted last. What you want is fine of course, it’s just not what I want.
So you FB fans that put down those of us who just don’t get what we want from FB, you should realize that you are NOT getting the same thing, the same tools, the same great compendium of information. I’m not putting down FB, BUT it’s of very little use to ME in this hobby. Likewise perhaps the FB fanboys could stop trying to insult people who don’t like FB.

I asked to join the 1:20.3 group and was immediately accepted. I’ll look thru the site and see what other members are doing.
As for my own FB page, it is basically used to keep up on my extended family, our trials and tribulations and such. None of my RR hobby is on it. Our Idaho and Washington backwoods explorations are on it, because we ride with family members.

Your are correct Greg, our minds are very different. We will never see eye to eye on the topic. It is a lot easier to scroll down until I see something I like. Plus I don’t miss anything. Forums, I pick and choose my topic. Sometimes I miss something because it was placed in a topic thread I don’t normally go on. By scrolling on one thread, to me is easier, especially when I use a smartphone. Not sure how im shooting myself in the foot, we just think very differently.
Try scrolling through LSC on a smart phone vs facebook group. Its a lot faster with FB or maybe im just faster then you(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
After reading Shawn’s posts, I never thought for a minute that he was ‘shooting himself in the foot’. Quite the contrary. The man makes some valid points and has common sense!

Michael, I think you still don’t get it, I’m not fighting “the sea” (I have no fear that FB will overtake forums).
Forums work better for what I want from the hobby. I have avoided insulting FB fans, so maybe the FB fans would avoid insulting people who are not FB fans.

I look at it this way, my favorite restaurant is Café Lurcat in Minneapolis. Their goat cheese salad and hanger steak are to die for! A favorite “date night” spot. But there are days where only a trip to Uncle Frankie’s, a truly tiny dive mom and pop hotdog shop will do.
Can’t imagine dining out without either of them.
And now I’m hungry.
