Interesting … three different folks with extensive experience presenting three different “right” ways to design a stair case.
Obviously the easiest way is to cut them out on a laser cutter. They could be cut from a single piece of sheet wood or acrylic, or as the separate notched uprights with inset rungs, which would require far less material because of waste material on the single sheet.
Here’s some stairs I built for an oil storage facility.

Bob, you can have 3 different formulas that are only acceptable with limitations and end up with similar outcomes. It’s just a matter of how you wish to define it.
Going by the 2 x rise + going = 25" rule or the rise + going =16" rule or the rise + going = 17" rule without limitations could result in a path with many tripping points or a wall with tiny ledges both of which would be unsafe.
As long as no one breaks their neck it doesn’t really matter.

My search on the internet has come up shockingly unproductive in finding models for me to copy for stairs and ladders for my mining district for this year’s challenge. I’m really surprised, but I just couldn’t find much. Does anyone have any ideas…specifically pictures of course…for appropriate stairs and ladders?
Oh yes, I did find many complicated examples:
But I am looking for something less complicated, less time-consuming, more appropriate to a mine, and, most significantly, more within my skill level.

Try Plastruct, hundreds of building shapes and styles several different scales, I have used a lot of their stuff

A relatively easy way to do stairs is to take 1/2" angled aluminum (“L”) and cut sections to the desired width of the stairway. Glue these side-by-side (point up) to a piece of brass or … and tip the assembly to 45% for the steps. Drill holes at the top and bottom of the brass (or …) for the hand rails and bend wire (45% at bottom and 135% at top) for these purposes.
Only works for a 1:1 rise/run unless you “shave” one side of the aluminum strips.

Ray, the fire escapes were made from brass and PARTS from Plastruct (gratings, railings), they don’t sell fire escapes per se. More here.
