Large Scale Central

An "Operations-Quality" Boxcar

Chuck, yes, I do. I think they look better then the original ones.

Yes, paint should come first. It will be nice to see that car all dressed up and ready to go to work.

Thanks Bruce for the information. I see what you mean about the grab irons being for a specific railroad. What size brass rod do you use?.

Hey David your cars look good. It looks like you re-do the roofs.

I use 1mm brass rod. The same jig does the straight grab irons as well.

And where, pray tell, are you going to store this one? You don’t have a whole lot of room left for more cars…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Hmmm I’m sensing a new spur and building coming … in the near future… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Good question…no good answer, yet.

Well, the building season is about over. Besides, the new building would have to be made to store cars. Ken’s right, I really don’t have room unless I go back to storing them in the garage in my custom carriers.

Spring is track laying season … Just do it!

Bruce do you have a track plan you could share?

Yes, David; I’m with you there…we have lots of B’mann Big Hauler rolling stock in the rolling stock fleet. In fact I think I still have several box car kits left to build, if and when I need them. I see you do the modifications on the doors and roofs, as I do. I body mount the Kadee Couplers too, with little trouble. All in all, great basic box cars at a great price. Adding a bit of weight, along with metal wheels helps too.

A very dated plan. Actually, the track is OK…the buildings, not so much.

Nice clean build Bruce, that boxcar has everything on it that it needs, well except maybe reporting marks(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Paint should probably come first.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif). I’m working on that.

That’s probably true, but they weather faster without it(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Fred, yes I am frugal, at least that what people tell me I am, when I say that I am cheep.

I do not know why, after a few years of mounting the doors properly, Bachmann switched then around to slide the other way. So I do fix that too. As well as replacing the brake staff with brass rod. I am in the process of rebuilding a trio of Bachmann flat cars…for a few years now, as well as taking some Bachmann 3 bay hoppers and really messing them up. I mean, modifying them to suit my needs. I haven’t added any weight to my cars, beyond what is added with metal wheels, and I have not had any tracking problems with my cars.

I envy those guys who have the time, and desire, to scratch-build their own cars. I was going to when I started, but then I discovered, that I could spend a lot of time, and more money, scratch-building, then I would spend buying unwanted Bachmann crap stuff and re-detailing it. Down at the sewing machine/train store, I got 2 Bachmann sets for $75. That was 2 10 wheelers, 2 boxcars, 2 flatcars, 2 combines, one power pack and 1, yes, 1 piece of curved Bachmann track for $75. I bought a bunch of Bachmann 3 bay hoppers, with metal wheels, for $25 each. I just cant see me scratch-building all of those cars, for what little I have spent on purchasing them. Now I just need to get off my butt and bash them.

Sorry for the thread derailment. But I really would like to see that boxcar, painted, lettered, lightly weathered, and earning it’s keep.

I donated this car to our very own BD as thanks for creating Large Scale Central.

But, I forgot to take a picture of it painted…so when you get a chance…or I can photograph it when I attend TrainOps.

Thanks again, Bob!

Which was a complete surprise, thank you again, Bruce. I’ll be lettering this and getting it into the ops rotation with the rest of my re-numbering work I’m doing.

Here she is. Bruce painted her, and our own Stan Cedarleaf provided the decals. Seemed appropriate to letter for the J&BRR. Just needs clearcoat to hide the decal sheen and protect them.

I like the contrast of the unpainted roofwalk boards.

Boy, that logo looks familiar…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
