Large Scale Central

1 Inch Scale and other "Ride Ons"

Aaron,

Maybe I can give you a little “nudge” if you want to find a small critter to run in 1-1/2 inch scale. West Bend Railcar Shops in West Bend, Wisconsin, builds very nice all steel critters and welded that are battery powered (battery seems to be the way to go now to get away from the “lawnmower” sound and the battery technology has greatly improved! These engines can be operated wirelessly, just like our garden trains and have full sound. If you go to his website and scroll through his photos, you can see what he can do. His prices are very fair. I have NO connection with him…just a satisfied customer.

Here is a short video of a friends 12" gauge set up that we visited a few weeks ago. It really re kindled my desire to build a ride on loco.

Well I cant get the video to embed from Flickr (normally I use Youtube) so here is the link:

Randy,

Your statement of wanting to build a ride on railroad since you were 12, brought back an old memory of being down on my grandfather’s farm and planning a railroad on that property. Amazing how we have desires that have festered all our lives. It is fun to achieve some of these desires.

Thanks for the tip Gary (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)someday maybe I will build a critter or buy one and customize it if the budget allows, but may be a little while yet. Definitely dreaming a little bit though, I can now blame Ric for that too just like my start in G scale hahaha (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

This thought also crossed my mind, but anyone who knows me knows I can not keep it this clean and uncluttered, just terrible as is (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

I think there are many out there who can blame Ric for fostering a lot of bottled up creativity and a yearning to be a railroader. God bless Ric for that!(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Ottawa Valley GRS

Today we headed north for Christmas with a stop over at Cedar Key, Florida. We drove north from Dundee, Florida, which is the home of the Ridge Live Steam Railroad. We have been camped there for a week and guess this will be our southern mooring for our Rail Bus and riding car. On Friday, we visited with friends at the Sebring System Railroad, which is two 5 acre pieces of property and households and the railroad stretches between them. There is a 10 acre plot next door with expansion to that neighbors property planned. We tried, but got side tracked to make it to other clubs, that are part of the Florida Live Steamers. Thank you Don Howard for showing us this organization and a great group of people.

We plan to be back to Ridge by the first of the New Year for an 1 1/2 inch operations session.

I’ve been through Dundee about a hundred times and never knew there was a Live Steam Club there. Picked up quite a few loads there, too. Then again I didn’t get to far off the beaten path in an 18 wheeler.

(BTW, the Pilot just up the road was were I was when you called me about Gordy Larabie. )

Got your Christmas card. Never got one before with flamingos on it…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Have a safe trip!

Visited a large 3 tier HO layout in Winter Haven, last week, and got a short rail fan trip of some of the areas of this part of Florida. On the Ridge’s Live Steam track, one of the industries is a large Tropicana juice plant and an associated “Can Yard”. This is also the area where Amtrak does or did split trains with half going to Miami and half to Tampa. Anyway, lots of rail activity in the area.

Geographically, if your interested, the large area is called the “Lake Wales Ridge”. Highest point on the Florida Peninsula and I guess the water shed for either direction, whatever water would shed. A Google search will give you lots of info. 40 feet of sand on top of old shale and the well on the property is 900 feet deep. Property is right in the middle of the orange groves and I guess a lot like property Walt was buying up in the 60’s for Disney World. Certainly a different Florida.

Head south on 27 to 29 and all you see is acre after acre of orange groves. Further south on 27 is where the tomatoes start although there are a bunch of them around Lake Wales, too.

Ric,

Have you run any of your sparkies at some of the FL places you’ve visited?

Your Boxcab and Mack chicken coop should draw attention!

Especially at Fred’s required volume in the Boxcab.

Ken,

Fl 27 is what we took down to Sebring, Fl. Both Jan and I are amazed at the size of the lakes in that part of Florida. Plus lots of Oragnges. Ate at a place called “Cherry Pockets” with a 3 foot alligator cruising for munchies. Good food and Florida atmosphere.

Don,

Left all the smaller stuff at the house. Hard enough to get ourselves down the road this year. We are having a great Winter.

Got notification of the Invasion this coming Summer. Love the plans.

Thought I’d share a little of what has intrigued me so much about the Ridge Live Steamers. These are pictures from their OPs last Winter. GOD willing, we’ll get to participate in the 2016 events.

What do they use for train orders during a session? RailOps? Or just wing it? How often do they have an Ops session?

Checked out the track plan. That place is huge!

I didn’t see any clipboards or cards but I could have missed it. One thing you don’t have to worry too much about down there are hills…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
