Large Scale Central

Rhode Island

Hello everyone! It’s been a while, and I am now (mostly) settled in my new apartment in Rhode Island. I’m not able to do much in the way of modeling now since I only brought my Forney with me. But, I am hoping to grab a few more things when I next visit Massachusetts.

Instead of modeling I am hoping to turn my attention to prototype railroads in this state. I love exploring abandoned ROW and similar areas. Plus, it’s always fun to chase a train in an attempt to get a few photos/videos. (Lucky for me, I happen to drive along the MBTA/Amtrak route between Providence and Warwick frequently.

Does anyone know of any interesting places to visit to do such activities? I welcome any and all railroad-related suggestions!

He might have some idea’s …

Sure, some hobby shops have hobby shop rats who know all kinds of good train spotting locations.

Hey John,

Besides Amtrak/MBTA, There is the Providence & Worcester (Now a G&W company). It’s been awhile, But I have occasionally caught the P&W switching the Valley Falls yard in Cumberland from the Church street bridge. I’m sometimes lucky enough to catch a P&W local roll by while I’m dining outside on the “platform” at a former station turned Brewpub in Putnam CT called The Crossings. http://crossingsbrewpub.com/ or in the beer garden at my local brewery https://www.blackpondbrews.com/home

Also, the Newport & Narragansett Bay/Seaview Railroad. runs some excursions and if you haven’t already done it, I suggest https://www.railexplorers.net/tours/rhode-island

As far as abandoned ROW, Both the East Bay Bike path http://www.riparks.com/Locations/LocationEastBay.html and the Blackstone Valley Greenway https://blackstoneheritagecorridor.org/exploring-the-blackstone-river-valley/maps-tours-guides/blackstone-river-bikeway/ are very nice trails.

Thanks Dan. I did find some small sections of preserved rails in Coventry today.
Have you ever been to the harbor behind JWU Harborside on the Prov/Cranston line? I loved watching the engines work while I was a student there. I’ll have to check out these places you’ve suggested.
