Modifying the Bachmann ground throw for Sunset Valley switches

A few years ago, Bachmann came out with a neatly engineered switch throw. They are designed to fit into most existing LGB-style track, as a replacement for existing switch machines, by fitting into the ends of the switch ties.

But this wont work with Sunset Valley switches, or any others that have solid ties.

I had thought about just screwing them to the tops of the switch ties, but that looks dumb to me.

After a bit of head scratching, I came up with a modification that works. I’ve had a few of these out on the layout for a couple of years with no issues.

First thing to do is dig out your trusty razor saw, and hack off the bits that go into the switch ties.

Using a box knife or Exacto, cut off the connector between the two ties.

Flip the switch machine over, and carve off one side of both ties. Make sure you cut off the same side on each tie. Clean up the ends so that things are nice and flush.

Bend the throw rod down slightly, using two pair of lineman’s pliers. Dont over do it, you just want to give it a bit of downward angle to force the end of the throw rod down into hole in the tiebar.

Line everything up, making sure the points and the switch machine are both in the same position (in or out, doesnt matter). Mark and cut the ends of the ties on the switch.

Line everything up, push the switch rod into the hole, and mark and drill a single hole in each tie. I use #4 screws, about 3/16 long, to connect everything.

The throw length is perfect for the Sunset Valley switches, with a slight pressure in each direction.

Just remember to take out the red/green flag before we arrive or they’ll end up broken off…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
