USA Trains SD70 fitted with 3-D printed Coupler boxes, etc. parts
I revisited my USA Trains SD70 with respect to its body mounted Kadee couplers.
Around year 2009, the two SD70s I have were fitted with Kadee #787 medium offset couplers mounted in an altered swinging box. Almost all my locos and rolling stock have since been fitted with Kadee centersets.
Finally, I upgraded the SD70s to centerset couplers, albeit using 3-D printed components that includes swinging coupler boxes, mounting pedestals, plug for rear pilot opening, and draft gear fairings for front & rear pilots. The coupler box accepts the newer Kadee 907 kit’s centerset coupler, springs, and lid.
llustrated below is the SD70 with Kadee centerset couplers.
Illustrated below is the SD70 coupled with a test car on straight track and then on 8 foot diameter curve track.
For full detail see SD70 vignette hosted for me by Greg E on his Web site, particularly, Appendix H, The Ultimate Coupler Solution, CamPac BoxTM
The 3-D print components for the SD70 (and several other applications for that matter) are a cooperative effort between me and Colin Camarillo who has the 3-D printer to make the components.
