Quick Sunday afternoon project - wood chip hopper extension

Worked this up today. I’ve a handful of these cheap Bachmann cars but they don’t fit my more modern time period. Now they will!

Note: the pics are a quick and dirty low-res low-infill prototype print, hence the warping. Will print finish quality tonight. In case anyone is curious, it will take 11.5 hours to print (both pieces) and $1.78 in material.

Nice

That’s cool !

Me likes, Dan. Your printer has pretty good resolution to be able to print the rivets and have them be so prominent. Are you printing the extension as it is shown in the design photo or are you printing sections laying flat and gluing them together? I am still amazed at the number of projects around the house where I have utilized my 3D printer. Worth every penny I paid.

Dan they look great and I’m sure will really add to most modern fleets. You stated :

May I ask what the electric cost is on that ?

Thank you in advance for the info (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

well done!

Thank you. The rivets are about .8 mm wide and i’m printing .15 mm layers. Printing 2 of the model shown. There is a lap joint for gluing them together. If finishing the flat areas proves to be a hassel I may change the design to receive squares of thin styrene. I recently bought a Cricut and believe it would be good for that.

Thanks. Power consumption is something I had not considered but now you have made me curious. I have one of those plugs that measures that, I just need to find it. I can tell you that the printer will run with the heated bed with a 350 watt power supply.

Not trying to open a can of worms or a black hole but I do appreciate your checking(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I found my old P3 Kill-A-Watt usage monitor and I see I use .495 kWh to print each half. At the winter rate of 9.515¢ per kWh that adds about .05 or .10 for both pieces.

I also found 80% infill was overkill and 40% is more than adequate, bringing the material cost down to 1.64. So total cost is $1.74.

So now I know my printer uses about .11kWh or about a penny an hour to print (PLA with bed @ 55) in the winter. Maybe I’ll wait until the rate drops in the summer to print the rest of these. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Whew, that is some high dollar printing, Dan (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
