A sad day on the RR&PPRR the turntable and engine house have been brought inside until next year. Most of my other buildings stay out year round and get buried in ice and snow but the turntable and engine house were not built to survive freezing thawing and freezing again many times over the Winter. There are other small items that are also brought in like the end of the track bumpers, water tower and a couple ceramic buildings.

I do usually leave out a dozen freight cars but if a big snow storm is coming I will bring them in. Last year we were dumped on and it never melted between storms so the snow and ice really piled up.

The RR would like to avoid situations like this… The overtime killed the budget.

Does anyone else pack it up for the Winter or do a partial pickup just in case of a scale plowable snow storm?

Because I very rarely (if ever) ran trains in the winter when we built our new layout with a 10’ long bridge going over our pond it was an easy decision to make.

In order to make the bridge last a long time we take it inside and store it in the basement for the winter, this gives me time to tinker around with it and add details that I just cant do while it is in place over the pond.

Also this year we just added a 12x8 storage shed in our yard so we also (for the first time ever) moved all of our buildings and figures into there for the winter. And again this will be a great for me to do some maintenance on them as well.

After the winter we had last year in these parts I feel much better bringing all those items in for the winter season.

But I will say, I was amazed that everything we left outside through the 6+feet of snow we had held up really well!

I had built a shelf in the barn to bring in my bridge and stuff. But it filled up with other things so my bridge has to stay out all winter. The first bridge had more of a deck, and the one winter the snow load was too much for it, and it developed a sag. The new bridge has a more open design and the snow can move through it instead of piling up on it.

I am not a cold weather duck, and I don’t enjoy playing out in the cold, so my railroad does shut down for the winter. Winter is my time to build stuff and sleep. Unfortunately, the last few years, I have done more sleeping then building.

Last winter I left everything out, Most are Pola buildings and hold up well. This spring I put out Wall Station which was kit bashed from a wood birdhouse. I’m not confident that it will hold up well buried in snow so I plan on bringing it in, via flatcar, on Thursday. My other wooden building, the long engine house, was well weathered when I got it and survived another winter last year with no new noticeable damage.

I bought a bunch of large plastic storage boxes and place them over my buildings, and bridges. Rolling stock is stored. We’ve already had 9" of snow, which about half has remained. More coming this weekend. A good time for repairs and painting until I can get back to my elevated bench work in March.

Buildings and track all stay out during the winter, except for any buildings that need repairs… All railroad cars and engines go into the freight yard, in the basement… They are never left out, except during "“Operations weekends”’, and then they freight cars stay out overnight Saturday to continue Sunday’s operations… The engines come in, to get batteries charged…

The buildings came in this year for a look-see and preventive maintenance, as always. The Tree was removed and cut to firewood, thanks to club pres Joe M., but the snow came before the Right of Way could be repaired. Unless we get a warming period, operations on the Chumstick River & Tumwater Canyon Ry Co are shut down until ice out in the spring.

You could use a “shu-fly” to work around the damaged area until track can be repaired.

I’ve heard about winter, it’s colder and the days are shorter. Hell, I’ve even got the patio heater on here in San Diego and I’m wearing a coat, it’s 62 degrees at 7pm.

Can’t wait until summer, this is tough.

Not exactly, we are hosting Thanksgiving this year so we have been cleaning up and moving stuff around and most of the moved stuff ended up in my garage. So the pizza is now landlocked by stuff in the back of the garage. Given that I have not been doing much with it, it may be there for a while. If I do a show next year I was thinking of taking the two micro pizzas instead, we’ll see.

My, you have such rough winters there.

We’ll be bringing Sully’s buildings and accessories in. There is a whole house for keeping them and the trains. Not yet. I’ve been out all morning and not wearing shoes yet.
