So while with the other members at the Finger Lake Live Steamers in Marengo, NY., I got to participate in a 1:12 operations. It was the first two attempts and used car cards and waybills. Still taking learning steps, but it was a lot of fun. They have created at least 5 industrial sidings, an industrial park, Cameron, and then they used the main through trackage yard, Wright, with 5 tracks.

The cards are laminated and then plastic, blue electrical boxes are used on posts to hold the cards at the industries. Total cars are about 26, 4 locos and 3 cabooses or crew riding cars.

We ran a few trains and then the set outs and pickups at the end of the session took quite a bit of time. The owner of many of the cars really doesn’t want them to be out in the rain and many of them are made of wood, so it kinda is like outdoors garden railroad ops with indoor equipment.

Lot of fun and an interesting concept. Pictures were taken and trying to find some of them.

For those interested in very large scale ride-on (1/8th scale) operation sessions; This Youtube is 5 parts showing full scale operations on a privately owned track in Western Michigan. Called White Creek Railroad. 6 miles of 7-1/2 inch gauge track. All locomotives involved including steam, gas engines and electrics with full sound capability and operated wirelessly. THIS IS not a hobby for the “weak-hearted” and their connection to the “depth of their wallet”!

I have many friends in the ride-on hobby who have visited this place and the size of the facility is beyond believable. Sits on over 128 acres of beautiful wooded land.

I showed the same you tube video in the other ! inch thread. Here I’ll try to explain with what we have.

Basically there are two types of trains, one that works the sidings on the mainline and one that works from Wright Yard to Cameron Yard and works the sidings in the Cameron Yard or the Industrial park. It is car card and waybill style ops. In many places you can see the posts with the blew boxes on them.

The blue boxes are plastic electrical outlet boxes and that is where the waybills are kept. You put the “setouts” in the back and take the same number of “pickups” from the front as you set out. All the car cards and waybills are laminated. Lots of work has gone in to getting the ops this far.

The voice you can hear in the back ground of the video is Ken C. He is the one that set up the ops and is explaining the ops and the trackage to the train crew.

I did not see the Industrial Park in the video, but Wright Yard is the main yard and where all train begin and end. All the sidings you do see are the mainline sidings, some with cars to be picked up sitting on them.

I posted in the Operations portion of this forum a copy of how the “operations” is being proposed and introduced into the procedures of running ops on ride on trains at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers. Quite a few interesting items are needed to be resolved, but we did have a couple of interesting scenarios over the last couple of weeks. I’m sure this is going to evolve as unknowns become apparent.
